Personalize Learning: The Expert Learner with Voice and Choice

Personalize Learning: The Expert Learner with Voice and Choice | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

Who is the Expert Learner?
Expert learners take responsibility for their learning. They view learning as something they do for themselves, not something that is done to them or for them. [Source: The Expert Learner]

The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) perspective for the Expert Learner is for a learner to be:
> Resourceful and knowledgeable

> Strategic and goal-directed

> Purposeful and motivated

Then how can you develop expert learners with voice and choice?

The Three Stages of Personalized Learning Environments provide the process to encourage learner voice. This process can guide the design of personalized learning environments that meets the needs of all learners.  Stage One is teacher-centered and encourages learner voice and some choice. Learner voice is a critical first step. There are ways to do this and this table here describes how the teacher and learner roles change in this stage.

When learners have the opportunities to say what they think and be heard by their peers and others, they feel their opinions and perspectives are valued and appreciated. Think about yourself as a learner and what it might feels like if you have a voice in how you learn and even influence decisions about teaching and learning.

These might work well with mature learners, but there is still a role for pedagogy. Another key point is are these really separate concepts or is it more likely they overlap along with pedagogy?

A variety of skills are needed to become a well-rounded individual. This supposes learning approaches tailored to facilitate acquisition of these skills.

""Blendspace, formerly known as EdCanvas, is now a part of Wikispaces and TES. The Blendspace service will continue to run as a stand-alone service. Beth Dichter's insight:

Blendspace is joined Wikispaces and TES and now offers their premium services for free to educators! Why use Blendspace?

* It is easy to organize and share materials.

* The format is visual (which appeals to many learners).

* You pick the topic and you pick the materials: videos, links, images, files, etc.

There are additional features and you may use Blendspace to assess and track student progress. You might consider using Blendspace as a component to introduce blended learning into your class.

This post from Richard Byrne also includes a video that teaches you the basics of Blendspace as well as Flipping and Blending the Classroom.

What 6.9 million clicks tell us about how to fix online education

What 6.9 million clicks tell us about how to fix online education | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

In a paper published this spring, the CSAIL team outlined some key findings on what online learners want from videos. These include:

Brevity (viewers generally tune out after six minutes)

Informality, with professors seated at a desk, not standing behind a podium

Lively visuals rather than static PowerPoint slides

Fast talkers (professors seen as the most engaging spoke at 254 words per minute)

More pauses, so viewers can soak in complex diagrams

Web-friendly lessons (existing videos broken into shorter chunks are less effective than ones crafted for online audiences)

Analysis from MIT about the features of online videos used in MOOCs that online learners prefer. Interesting analysis for MOOCs but these features could be applied to videos used in any implementation of blended learning.

Also shows that the slick, production theatre videos with a highly professional look may not be the ones that students prefer to watch.

6 Myths of Social Sharing - Marketing Technology Blog

6 Myths of Social Sharing - Marketing Technology Blog | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

There are no rules! This has been my mantra for as long as I’ve been marketing. What I watch that works fantastic for one company barely moves the needle for another. Virtually no two businesses are alike, yet we have an entire marketing consulting industry of so-called experts that give bunk advice every single day. +

Of course there are strategies that may not align with a company, there are strategies that work short-term but can do damage long-term, and there are even strategies that can get you into trouble. At the root of your marketing strategy, though, should be your ability to observe the strategies that are being deployed and then test your own. Don’t discount strategies that didn’t work for other companies or that your consultant dislikes… they may just work!+

Po.st has dug through our social data and found some surprising information that debunks several social sharing ideas you may have assumed otherwise true.

This is a great infographic from the folks at Po.st, a URL shortening and social sharing platform – 6 Myths of Social Sharing.

Teaching Students Skills to become Better Online Readers

Teaching Students Skills to become Better Online Readers | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

Soon after Maryanne Wolf published “Proust and the Squid,” a history of the science and the development of the reading brain from antiquity to the twenty-first century, she began to receive letters from readers. Hundreds of them. While the backgrounds of the writers varied, a theme began to emerge: the more reading moved online, the less students seemed to understand."

Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning

Making Learning Meaningful: 6 Priorities For Whole Learning | Learning Happens Everywhere! | Scoop.it

"We recently discovered the Bay Area’s Prospect Sierra School’s interesting learning model that prioritizes 6 ideas for learning in the 21st century. There is, of course, no single “best” way to pursue “21st century learning”–nor any learning at all for that matter. But seeing the way other inspired educators pursue the idea can teach each one of us a lot. In this model, we appreciate the inclusion of self-knowledge, as well as moving past the idea of content to true disciplinary knowledge–seeing knowledge in context and application."

Via Beth Dichter

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 26, 9:22 PM

This post shares another visual that provides one model of learning in the 21st century. Specifically, it prioritizes six ideas:

* Disciplinary Knowledge - "Build and apply content knowledge to think deeply and act as a practitioner of the discipline"

* Self-Knowledge - "Experiment and create, while embracing failure as an opportunity for growth in order to design new ideas and solutions."

* Innovation Creation - "Recognize one’s emotional, physical, and learning needs, strengths, and challenges to nurture personal growth and resilience"

* Collaboration - "Share knowledge and resources, building on a diversity of ideas and experiences to achieve group goals and interdependence"

* Responsibility - "Understand one’s impact and influence in a local and global community; cultivate compassion, and take positive action"

* Communication - "Express ideas effectively through varied means of presentation; understand one’s audiences, actively listen; and build connection"

Additional information on each of these six ideas is included in the post.

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, June 27, 1:08 PM
