▶ Megacities Reflect Growing Urbanization Trend - YouTube

Share your videos with friends, family, and the world
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This very interesting video put interviews, questions, as well as images in literal form for the audience.  They tackle issues such as rapid urbanization, poverty, future, environmental issues, as well as government and politics.  This video sums up most of what my students would have read and learned about and now gives images to the books and personal stories that will touch their hearts.  I think videos can have a powerful place in the classroom if used effectively and personally I enjoy watching documentaries and videos after I have read because they often clear up areas of confusion.  I hope they enjoy this video as much as I did and learned from it.

South Asia's smog 'getting worse'

South Asia's smog 'getting worse' | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

Learning about Environmental issues is a big part of geography.  With the pollution increasing in South Asia, we are seeing many problems come from this.  The article even says that some days in a row the temperature drops because no sunlight is getting through the smog. If this is the case, it is very dangerous to inhale because no air is circulating and there is no fresh sunlight coming in.  This talks about the current issue and yearly trends that don't look positive looking at the future of south asia.  This article also hints that this problem is a direct result from the increased urbanization and modernization from South Asia.

Will Conflicts Over Water Scarcity Shape South Asia's Future? | In Asia

Will Conflicts Over Water Scarcity Shape South Asia's Future? | In Asia | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
Climate change combined with rapid population growth and urbanization is placing intense pressure on South Asia's most precious resource: water. Per capita
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

Climate change combined with rapid population growth and urbanization is placing intense pressure on South Asia’s most precious resource: water. This explains the main thesis of this text and talks about how the water issue is a very serious problem for south asia and will hurt their future. This is a current problem as well as text which I think is more interesting than old documents that students would be bored by.  Environmental concerns as well as flood control is a big part of the Geospatial skills academic standards and this text talks about these concerns and gives students a better understanding of the content.  From this reading I would like students to create their own solutions to this water problem and how their ideas could help south Asia and their future.

Short essay on Narmada Valley Project

This short Narmada is the fifth largest river of the country. It is the longest west-flowing river in India whose water resource is greater than the combined potentials of the Satluj, Beas and Ravi rivers.

Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This short essay provides a good detail of information on this project that can be used early on in the unit to give students an overall concept of this Project.  I think this could be used to give students a quick background and understanding of this project without diving in too deep.  Since it is short, we can have students read this article then write about what they understand and don't understand regarding this.  These details can be used later on what I emphasize.

Israel should increase Palestinian water quotas - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East

Israel should increase Palestinian water quotas - Al-Monitor: the Pulse of the Middle East | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
The problem of wastewater in the West Bank endangers Israel, thus the solution may lie in increasing water quotas allotted to the Palestinians.
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This article deals with environmental issues as well as local conflict in the Middle-East. Its personally interesting because it talks about a concern that in america we never have to deal with which would open students eyes to problems for other countries. It's important because the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a long-lasting issue that isn't close to being resolved, so it's always integral to look at the many problems that are surrounded around it. I would use this in class for a debate or essay about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the future it holds for them.

Rice Mill Picture -- Bangladesh Photo -- National Geographic Photo of the Day

Rice Mill Picture -- Bangladesh Photo -- National Geographic Photo of the Day | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
See a picture of a rice mill worker taking a rest in Bangladesh, from National Geographic.
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This photo is extremely insightful. I plan on starting my class with an interesting video or picture to start the conversation for the day.  Many students in the cities rarely know anything about farm or agricultural life. This is an insightful way to show students where our food comes from, who does the work for us, and how it's made. This picture can be used for various classes besides geography, it can even range to Economics. The class can discuss the different parts of the picture, like the rice, the worker and the broom, or exactly how much rice there is.

The Key To Entrepreneurial Success In South Asia | TechCrunch

The Key To Entrepreneurial Success In South Asia | TechCrunch | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
The combination of skinny jeans, hipster glasses and confident personalities like Dave McClure or Steve Blank, it seems, is irresistible. But this style has..
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This article provides a brighter side regarding South Asias future in terms of technology and entrepreneurial success.  Most of the text we have looked at talk about the negatives regarding urbanization and the environmental problem dealing with water.  This article talks about how much potential is in Southern Asia and how, " The bulk of the world’s economic growth will come from regions like India and China, and although they may have cyclical slowdowns, these markets are necessary to the world economy."  The author writes about how much growth and potential she sees in these areas and how these entrepreneurs  can help their hometowns problems and help the lives of millions of people.  " Solving large local problems is one easy way for Asian startups to differentiate and sustain a competitive edge." What I like about this article is that it shows how individuals can create solutions to local problems and have a role in positively affecting the lives of millions of people.  This may provide positive feelings for my students that maybe have ideas or projects that they are interested in and could see how they could have a big impact.

A new look at urbanization's environmental impact

A new look at urbanization's environmental impact | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
A research team from Sweden has developed a technique for quick, simple and cost-effective mapping of worldwide urban growth and its environmental impact.
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This reading is very exciting.  It talks about a group of researchers that have developed a technique that is quick and simple and can map urbanization and world growth.  This method incorporates synthetic aperture radar (SAR) that is a technology that is impervious to bad weather and clouds, time of day, smog, dust storms, and other factors that often interfere with information gathering.  I like this text because it shows current studies that are taking place to gain information that can bring awareness to our worlds future especially considering how important urbanization is.  This would be a good class starter reading where students can read the text then discuss as a class what they took from the reading.

Urbanization, Infrastructure and Economic Growth In Southeast Asia

Urbanization, Infrastructure and Economic Growth In Southeast Asia | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This fascinating article looks at the future regarding South East Asian Nations and the rapid urbanization that is currently taking place.  With rapid urbanization comes a demand for infrastructure which currently has yet to be built and causes a huge problem for these nations.  With urbanization, comes a unparalleled decline in poverty which poses another problem for these nations.  Not to mention the climate change and continued rise in temperatures and increased precipitation cause future problems.  The article directly addresses one of my learning objectives asking some positives and negatives regarding urbanization in the Southern Asia area.  Not to mention this article is interesting while still being informational and easy to read for my students.  I think they will enjoy this and take out important knowledge from it.

Indias Greatest Planned Environmental Disaster: The Narmada Valley Dam Projects

Indias Greatest Planned Environmental Disaster: The Narmada Valley Dam Projects | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This reading talks about the Narmada Valley Project.  It explains the problem, some background, key actors, demographics, different strategies to fixing this, solutions, as well as recommendations.  I would like this to be used in a group assignment.  Students would be broken up into groups and each group would read and write about a different detail of this project.  They then would present their information with the class and help the entire class to learn more about this project and what it means for the geography and environmental issues of Indias greatest planned environmental disaster.

War in Syria: Interactive Map Outlines Major Battle Zones

War in Syria: Interactive Map Outlines Major Battle Zones | South Asia Mini Unit | Scoop.it
This interactive map explores the years-long war that has entangled Syria and is now on the international stage.
Johnny Indlecoffer's insight:

This interactive map helps students not only learn what's going on in the world, but where it's happening. There is a stereotype that American kids are notorious for not knowing where Iraq is on the map. This map not only shows a geographic location, but has important cities that are constantly in the news for a major event of the 21st century.  This is an interesting map that gives a short summary of these different government zones, rebel contra, as well as major battle sites.  Asking students to gain an understanding of these different locations will help give them a visual example of South Asia as well as where battles are taking place. I would use this when teaching about current events in the Middle East
