Educational Technology Is Making Achievement Gaps Even Bigger

Educational Technology Is Making Achievement Gaps Even Bigger | Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

This is not a story of the familiar “digital divide”—a lack of access to technology for poor and minority children. This has to do, rather, with a phenomenon Neuman and Celano observed again and again in the two libraries: Granted access to technology, affluent kids and poor kids use tech differently. They select different programs and features, engage in different types of mental activity, and come away with different kinds of knowledge and experience.

The Art of Focus

The Art of Focus | Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

The lesson from childhood, then, is that if you want to win the war for attention, don’t try to say “no” to the trivial distractions you find on the information smorgasbord; try to say “yes” to the subject that arouses a terrifying longing, and let the terrifying longing crowd out everything else.

Ebooks v paper - FT.com | Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century | Scoop.it

Yet research has already told us a lot about how we read now. First and foremost, it emphasises that even using paper, there are many different approaches. Most of us probably have a settled style: you might be a skimmer, a skipper, a front-to-back completist, a keeper of the pristine page or an obsessive writer of marginalia. Whatever the case, our habits have probably been created largely as combination of childhood experience and how the medium we read in is nudging us.

Definitely worth reading this article. I have heard many teachers proclaim that reading a "book" is more beneficial than an ereader, etc. I have not necessarily bekieved what they say, but the evidence is just not there yet, however it is beginning to come and my own anecdotal evidence seems to resonate with what is being stated here.

The tension being experienced between people and digital technologies is there for students as well. The pace of change is such that perhaps even students are unable to keep pace. Using each other's expertise seems particularly relevant which means entering into new relationships between teachers and students where the rules are less rigid.
