LearningDevelopment@ForthValleyCollege's insight:

Studying is not the intended function of this application, however, by uploading lecture slides as images, or taking pictures of the board during class, then uploading these images to Pixntell, would allow you to create your very own custom Flashcards. By recording your own audio notes to accompany the images, you could create short movies that could act as bitesize recap tools to support your revision, or prompts for studying, or a visual plan for your coursework.

The Real Benefit of iPads in Education: A Catalyst for a Critical Change in Pedagogy

The Real Benefit of iPads in Education: A Catalyst for a Critical Change in Pedagogy | Learning Development | Scoop.it

"I say this categorically: iPads are not magic. On their own, they do not transform stale and outdated pedagogies. They do, however, vastly improve engagement. Unfortunately, if this enthusiasm for learning is not channeled towards a more student-centered, twenty-first century approach to pedagogy, the adoption of key skills in the learning is seriously jeopardized.

The challenge, then, is to plan teaching as carefully as we do infrastructure and to invest as much in fostering twenty-first century teaching methodologies as we do in hardware. If we do not do these things, we simply end up with devices which are fun to have but not worth very much in the classroom."

I believe in everything you stated in your post about iPads in the classroom, but believe you have to go back one step. If teachers are not provided with the opportunity to engage in professional development classes concerning the use this new teaching technique, the proper use of the technology will never correctly reach the classroom. The desire is not enough..the know-how has to come first.

Corrie Martin's curator insight, Today, 7:02 PM

Curiously, my daughter's school just made a huge investment in iPads this year ($150,000).  Too soon to tell the long term merit there, but it has increased engagement in educational-social interaction (group projects, shared story writing).

There is no denying that coding is snowballing in importance across schools all around the world. Whether it’s Scratch, Programming Games or the Hour of Code, an understanding of software and the ability to code is fast becoming an essential skill for all 21st century learners.

At a recent TEDx event in Jackson Mississippi, Professor Marina Bers discussed her research into the design and study of innovative learning technologies to promote children’s positive development. How does this research manifest and present itself in the real world? Well programming robots of course!

A New Kind of Social Anxiety in the Classroom - The Atlantic

A New Kind of Social Anxiety in the Classroom - The Atlantic | Learning Development | Scoop.it
Stress about a meeting that is still a week away, handwringing before talking to the cashier in the grocery line, worrying about seeing an acquaintance on the street—for people with social anxiety disorder, even the simplest task can prove challenging. The symptoms of social anxiety often set in around adolescence, when people place a new emphasis on social interactions and their place in their peer groups. But some academics fear that greater access to technology could exacerbate social anxiety among teens, particularly as smartphones, tablets, and computers become omnipresent in and out of the classroom. And even though teachers are increasingly exploiting the devices as learning tools, they also play an integral role in stemming the tide of social anxiety.

by Leila Meyer: Putting concepts in context. Sarah Smith-Robbins, director of learning technologies and a marketing instructor in the Kelley School of Business at Indiana University, thinks social media can help take learning out of the classroom. "I want students to see the concepts that we're talking about in class not just as things that are important when we're in class, but as things that are important in their lives," she said. "Because these tools live in their pockets and I can give them reasons to be on the lookout for content to curate for the course, it helps them think through the application of the concepts from class."

Being a Better Online Reader - The New Yorker

Being a Better Online Reader - The New Yorker | Learning Development | Scoop.it
Certainly, as we turn to online reading, the physiology of the reading process itself shifts; we don’t read the same way online as we do on paper. Anne Mangen, a professor at the National Centre for Reading Education and Research at the University of Stavanger, in Norway, points out that reading is always an interaction between a person and a technology, be it a computer or an e-reader or even a bound book.

Marja Oilinki's curator insight, January 24, 11:44 AM
