How Music Can Improve Memory

How Music Can Improve Memory | Student Support | Scoop.it
Songs and rhymes can be used to remember all kinds of information. A study just published in the journal Memory and Cognition finds that adults learned a new language more effectively when they sang the words instead of spoke them. Even great literature is susceptible to this treatment. Book Tunes, a collaboration between educational entrepreneur Jonathan Sauer and hip-hop artist Andy Bernstein (he performs under the name Abdominal), turns long, wordy books into compact, catchy raps, spoken over an insistent beat.

Hands-on: Child-friendly YouTube Kids app launches on Android and iOS

Hands-on: Child-friendly YouTube Kids app launches on Android and iOS | Student Support | Scoop.it
YouTube is a fantastic way to keep your kids entertained with a tablet or smartphone, but it’s also a little concerning. You just never know if your child will end up using the suggested videos feature to jump from Sesame Street’s Elmo to a drunk Elmo parody, or view inappropriate advertising.

Google is aiming to solve that problem with a new app called YouTube Kids available on Monday for Android and iOS. The Kurio and nabi kids’ tablets will also receive the app in the coming weeks.

Early reports about the app surfaced late last week, but details were a little thin. Now that the app is available we can say that at first glance this app should appeal to parents and kids alike.

Sketchnoting

Sketchnoting | Student Support | Scoop.it

Sketchnoting, in its purest form, is creating a personal visual story as one is listening to a speaker or reading a text. I also believe the interactive notebook, which includes the process of taking "regular" notes" while listening to a speaker and later creating a sketchnote of the text notes, would also be considered sketchnoting. This page will provide links, ideas, tips, and research evidence dealing with the power of sketchnoting. If you are looking for a book on the topic, the seminal work is this book by Mike Rohde.

These materials are for anyone who creates documents and presentations in their work. There are many reasons why you should ensure that the documents and presentations you create are accessible and inclusive.

There is a legal obligation for organisations to ensure that no-one is disadvantaged because of a disability. There is a requirement to make reasonable adjustments to ensure that as many people as possible can access your services. These adjustments should be anticipatory, which means they need to be in place before you are aware that a disabled user is having problems.

Making your documents and presentations accessible is good practice which can benefit all users regardless of ability.

Evernote - for organizing teachers & students | Powerful Learning Practice | Student Support | Scoop.it

by Jennifer Carey

"If you are not familiar with Evernote, now is the time. Evernote is a free web tool and application that helps you to organize your notes, emails, images, and, well…. everything. It’s hard to describe, but this 50-second video highlights some of the key features and abilities.

'Evernote can be a great application for teachers, both to keep yourself coordinated and to facilitate student learning. I want to highlight a few ways that I have employed Evernote not only to make my life a little easier as a teacher, but to help my students and my classroom stay more focused and organized.

'First, if you need to familiarize yourself with a quick tutorial, try out the “Getting Started Guide For Teachers.” This will help you with the basics of setting up an account, creating notes, and syncing across platforms. Trust me, it’s very easy and you’ll be up and running in just a few minutes. If you are already a more advanced user, then make sure that you set aside some time to browse their blog and YouTube channel for more advanced tips and tricks!"
