The failure of praise
Research has found that praise can actually undermine performance and self-esteem in many contexts. One study found that praise for intelligence leads to the belief by the recipient that their intelligence is fixed, and thus not something that they can influence through action or effort (Dweck, 2007). This is critical because intelligence is in fact malleable, and improved by taking risks. Students grow when they try something difficult that might lead to failure. Because failure is one of the most important tools for learning, growth requires a mindset that embraces challenge and the potential for failure.

I found it to be very interesting and the parameters for praise given here are some good practices to follow when giving praise. It can be done with without undermining student motivation. Don't let "titles" get in the way...call it praise or feedback...we all need and instinctively give one form or the other. Both articles are a great read!

The Moodle rubric, a system built for criteria-based assessment, explicitly describes the performance expectation for an assignment. The rubrics have several criteria and each criterion has several descriptive levels provided. A rubric identifies several attributes. They include descriptions, performance levels and the criteria.

Criteria take into account the performance aspects that an instructor intends to assess. The description attribute denotes the desired characteristics associated with a criterion. The performance level is a rating scale in rubric used to identify the level of mastery a student has within a given criteria. Each descriptive level has a numerical grade and an instructor can choose the level that answers a given criterion in the best way possible.

Authentic, learner-centered, collaborative assessment alternatives
Alternative assessment methods such as writing assignments, collaborative assignments, case studies, and debates can avoid the problems often associated with tests and quizzes. “There are many ways to approach assessment. It depends on the context of the course. When we teach faculty how to teach online, we try to give them a taste of a majority of those methods. I don’t know that we can cover all of them in one course, but there are multiple ways to get at the issues and make this a real-life situation for the students so they can actually learn from the process,” Pratt says.
Palloff and Pratt recommend selecting assessment methods that are learner-centered and authentic.

For my Teaching friends. Great information about assessments focusing on more than simple memorizing information. With today's "age of information", open book testing can be used, when designed appropriately, to actually teach as well as assess.

it is a real challege to stretch thinking to real-life assessment approaches and take everyone on the journey. the focus on learner centred and authentic is great, and dare I mention the many of these approaches lend to assessment only pathways ... but thats a whole other challenge!

Dr. Reshan Richards: "Each of these approaches allows teachers and learner to capture and create moments of learning, excerpts of understanding, and reflections of experience. Let’s pretend to be one of my 5th-grade math students from last year participating in an activity about tessellating patterns. The activity was to figure out what individual shapes, when arranged in a flat pattern with touching sides, formed a closed tesselating patter (a regular tessellation). This activity involved using physical manipulative objects (pattern blocks), a piece of paper to document findings (journal workbook page), and NCTM Illumination’s Tessellation Creator website as resources for engaging in the experience of exploring regular tessellation. Here’s how the QFAT could be applied to this activity with an iPad."

I have practiced a system that covers four of the 5 key strategies for many years starting at five years of age.  I would not teach any other way. With this kind of assessment students after seven years of age can lead parent teacher conferences with ease and confidence. Had a dad in tears once who confessed it was the first time his son had talked meaningfully to him about his learning. Then I was in tears too....

A good little diagram but it does not address the issue of how to do it..it requires modelling, first by the teacher, then slowly devolving the responsibility to the learner, and focus on one subject area at a time e.g. Literacy . In my experience it also requires set aside time with each student to assess together, recording what has been discussed so it is not forgotten. I am talking about elementary learners here..
