#Makerspace for Education - University of British Columbia MET #makered | Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Despite the popularity and trend of the term “makerspace”, educators have to search hundreds of articles, websites and books to determine what this term is, how to begin, where to locate materials and determine the educational significance. Another complication is that the resurgence of this DIY movement found its grassroots in the public population and is just starting to make its way back to education. This makes navigating materials from an educational lens even more challenging.  Makerspace for Education, is a collaborative digital space for educators to explore how to create and use makerspaces in their own environments and will help to transform pedagogies of individual educators through immersion in the context and the support of a community of practice.

Technically a Librarian: Make Writing

 So what have I learned?

-The "makerspace" isn't really a "space" at all. It's more of a culture and a mindset. In reality, what we call the "makerspace" is really just convenient access to the storage of everything.
- The makerspace doesn't have to be an extension activity or an add-on. There are so many ways that you can incorporate making into the curriculum. Advice: take the most boring topic you can think of and incorporate making.
- Begin with "suggested" activities to get the creative juices flowing, but don't limit their creativity to just those activities.
- If assigning a grade, try to focus on the process and the planning rather than the final product. It's important to stress that mistakes will happen and you only truly fail if you give up. Sometimes the greatest inventions occurred on accident.

Maker Education and Social-Emotional Development - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein #makered

Maker Education and Social-Emotional Development - User Generated Education @JackieGerstein #makered | Learning Commons | Scoop.it

"Maker education, when planned around skills acquisition, can enhance social-emotional development.

Self-Awareness: Making in all its forms requires a full range of skills including cognitive, physical, and affective skills. Given this need for multiple and diverse skill set, effective and successful making comes from an accurate assessment of one’s strengths and limitations as well as having optimism and confidence that challenges can be overcome within the making process. Example questions related to self-awareness and making include:

     * What strategies am I using to increase my awareness of my emotions and how they influence my performance during the making-related tasks?

     * What are my strengths given this particular making task?

     * What are my limitations and how can I use my strengths to overcome them? ..."

This this post includes an infographic which summarises areas where students can gain self-awareness when involved in maker projects in the classroom. While the piece focuses on maker education in the school classroom it's also applicable to higher education. The areas of social-emotional development highlighted here resonate with the ones we've seen students identify in their reflective blogs when we run our Doctor as Digital Teacher SSC where they design and develop a digital learning resource.

Worlds of Learning | What Does Making Mean to You?

Worlds of Learning | What Does Making Mean to You? | Learning Commons | Scoop.it
June 7, 2016 marked the first annual MakerJam event. This event was created by students at our school, for students not only at our school, but for children across the country and world as well.  Footage of the day, along with student creations, can be seen at #MakerJam2016.  During the event, I touched base with several of our students to ask them:

What does making mean to you?
Their responses serve as an important reminder that making is a deeply personal thing to those who experience it.  Most students view it as an opportunity for the individualism to shine. We as educators cannot possibly try to define making as one thing, nor try to define what it means for our students.  The educational makerspace is based on student ownership of what making and learning means to them. Some of the student responses can be viewed below.

Where others see trash, I see treasure. Reusing, repurposing, and recycling items that can be found in the kitchen garbage can, on the curb, or collected by friends and families helps educators to save money while protecting the environment.

Today, our library makerspace has developed into a 21st century learning laboratory, with funding from grants and through the generosity of individuals and organizations that support our DonorsChoose projects. But it wasn’t always this way.

Google Keep is perfect for that shared grocery list or those quick meeting notes, or that inspirational idea keeper...
