"I had the privilege of holding a Google Hangout with Holly Clark (@HollyEdTEchDiva) and Tanya Avrith(@EdTechSchools). It was a great chat, where we compared US, NZ and Canadian school systems. Afterwards I was checking out Holly’s stuff and came across her great introduction to iPads in Classrooms. I checked with Holly and she was keen I do one of my visual representations of the ideas. So here it is, my visual, albeit briefer introduction for teachers who just got iPads:"
"Reading is just the communication of ideas through alphanumeric symbols. I’m not sure what this represents such hallowed ground for teachers, but it does. Personally I’d be more concerned with reading habits, reasons for reading, the quality of reading materials, etc. Symbols change, forms change, media change. See the gif animations that demonstrate how a student feels when “bae won’t respond to them.” This is your audience, and these are the symbols they gravitate towards.
In the apps-for-close-reading post, I said that this “interaction” between reader and text during close reading “doesn’t require technology, but can be changed by it.” So it made sense, I thought, to guess at some ways this happens. Or should be happening, anyway.
With more personalization, more access, and more connectivity, we should be creating a generation of close-readers that can’t get enough. So if we’re not, the question is, why isn’t that happening? The pieces are there."

"National Geographic has tons of fantastic apps and The Underground Railroad: Journey to Freedom is a great choice for upper elementary and middle school students. This interactive app introduces children to the Underground Railroad by placing them in first person experiences. They’ll have to make decisions on how to proceed from on step to the next while they learn about this period in history."
"Emerging technologies is, can be, should be a driving force of this evolution towards Education 3.0. Information access, communication methods, the ability for creative express is qualitatively different than any other time in history due to technological advances."
"If you are a primary class mathematics teacher you know that putting the foundation of understanding in place for new mathematics principles can be challenging. This often involves building on concepts like number systems and arithmetic basics while incorporating new ideas. For example, to teach the concept of square root “√”, you will have to ensure that students are well-equipped with the concepts of multiplication and division."
UNESCO is currently investigating how access to text can be improved through the use of technology, specifically basic mobile phones. Today mobile phones are common in areas where books are scarce. The United Nations estimates that 6 billion people have access to a connected mobile device of some sort, while only 4.5 billion have access to a toilet.

"This week I’ve been getting excited about using Kahoot in the classroom. Kahoot delivers online quizzes and surveys to your students.
It works very similar to the more well-known Socrative. The teacher displays the question and the answers on the beamer or tv in the front of the classroom. The students see the corresponding icon and color on their screen. They have 30 seconds to answer on their devices and get points for every question they answer right. The quicker they answer the more points they receive. After each question the top 5 students are shown on the board with their scores. This is where it gets exciting. The students love this immediate feedback and want to get to the top position. I have never seen students so focused on answering the questions correctly."

"Digital storytelling involves combining digital media (images, voice narration, music, text, or motion) to tell a story. Over the past few years, digital storytelling has become an increasingly popular and effective way for students to meet a range of learning goals in the classroom. Scratch, a programming project from the Lifelong Kindergarten Group at the MIT Media Lab, might be an unexpected tool for digital storytelling. But using Scratch to tell a story is a “twofer”: Students practice important ELA skills and at the same time use computational thinking."
