Five habits that boost independent learning! - Innovate My School | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it

Independent learning has many different names - child centred, personalised or self-regulated - but at its core it is the process of shifting responsibility for the learning process from the teacher to the pupil. To achieve this outcome successfully, pupils need to have a deep understanding of their learning, be self-motivated and willing to collaborate with the teacher within the learning environment.

New Ways to Teach Young Children to Code

New Ways to Teach Young Children to Code | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
Many parents want their children to learn to code. Tech leaders and educators are pushing schools to add more computer-science classes, and families often see programming as an essential skill for the future.

But unlike reading to your children or teaching them to count, preparing children to code can feel daunting and unnatural. Many parents think they can’t help because they don’t know math or programming themselves.

Increasingly, though, parents who have never written a line of code are finding ways to teach their children basic programming skills. Some tap websites, gaming apps or online puzzles using visual programming languages designed for children. Others focus on teaching the kind of thinking that coding requires. For instance, even young children can learn how to break tasks into steps and perform them in order—a programming concept called sequencing—or to repeat a series of steps until a task is complete, a concept called loops.

Sugata Mitra: schools should scrap the 3Rs | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it

Jesus Sandoval's curator insight, February 6, 5:26 AM

For many reasons I agree with what Sugata Mitra says about replacing certain education topics such as reading, writing and arithmetic with other beneficial ones such as comprehending, communicating and computing. In today’s modernized society skills such as communication and understanding technology off the palm of one’s hand is very beneficial when looking for a well paid job. Once a student enters high school these skills (communicating and computing) should be strengthened. It will only benefit the students down the road. What is the point of teaching students how to write with correct punctuation and proper grammar when they can simply turn on  grammar check when typing on a computer? The point is that machines and devices have been developed to do one’s thinking for them. The best option is to teach students how to work with these devices and machines (computing) and not much writing and reading anymore. The world is developing way too quickly to be focused on perfecting one’s writing and reading skills.
