Game-like language learning in 3-D virtual environments

Game-like language learning in 3-D virtual environments | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
Abstract
This paper presents our recent experiences with the design of game-like applications in 3-D virtual environments as well as its impact on student motivation and learning. Therefore our paper starts with a brief analysis of the motivational aspects of videogames and virtual worlds (VWs). We then go on to explore the possible benefits of both in the area of foreign language learning. For our research study we have designed a VW-platform, called VirtUAM. This permits us to store and record data related to users' behaviour within the VW. Furthermore the platform has been employed to build several islands (virtual spaces), which implement different game levels. The virtual spaces themselves are used to give students a basic training in different language skills related to the German language. In order to obtain data regarding the game's impact on student learning and motivation, we designed several tests, which were completed both before and after the student participants played the game. Additionally we gave them a general questionnaire, which was only filled out after the game and which aimed at getting personal feedback from the learners. Quantitative and qualitative results shown in this work are part of a larger project which intends to study the impact of game-like applications within virtual environments and with regard to teaching and learning processes in general.

VWs are 3-D environments where users’ graphical representations, called avatars can interact with other avatars as well as objects within the environment. Additionally, users are allowed to create new objects. What particularly makes VWs highly attractive for many users is its similarity to the real world’s appearance, coupled with its varied possibilities of interaction.Interaction is here seen as a multidirectional process in which students cooperate with instructors as well as other learners in real time activities, getting furthermore the opportunity to perform tasks in a collaborative way. The fact that a huge number of real-life activities can be reproduced or simulated makes VWs a highly immersive environment (Helmer, 20 07; Melchor Couto, 2010; Molka-Danielsen, 2009).While VWs have already been recognized by many educational institutions (universities, high schools, language academies, etc.) for having great potential for teaching and learning purposes (Consortium, 2007; Nardi, Ly, & Harris, 2007), Game-like language learning in 3-D virtual environments (PDF Download Available). i'm sure that most of nowaday's teachers have used ICT's in classroom and actually enjoy doing it. It has became a really necessary tool the use of virtual aids into the classroom.
Here there are 7 proposals of "modern tools" to use into the classroom that are specially usefull for gropus tasks.

In my personal opinion I really liked numer 1 which is a board tool that lets users organize thoughts and ideas spatially and plus, it could be connected to youtube and google drive (two digital toolsvery used by students) and i liked numer4 aswell because it is specially designed for children and teenagers.

Enjoy the reading and i hope my colleagues use some of these digital tools in their classes.

There are psychological reasons why games are so fun to play. Bringing that fun into the classroom is a must when possible to do so. Game-based teaching is an exciting adventure for any teacher to embark on with their students. It excites learners and connects them to the curriculum in ways they can appreciate and be attentive to. Unfortunately, like many instructional approaches with a strong technology foundation, there can be difficulties. But with every challenge comes an opportunity to grow and excel.
Nicky Ren's curator insight, March 9, 9:11 AM

There are psychological reasons why games are so fun to play. Bringing that fun into the classroom is a must when possible to do so, as it aids students to learn better through hands-on activities. Therefore, to encourage more of these game-based teaching,  I feel that there is a need to address these obstacles like time, cost, and lack of resources etc.

Google drive is something teachers fear to use because of their lack of awareness of the new technological tools being implemented around the world, this mostly happens with older teachers from the past generation who tend to be more traditional. Google drive as a great tool to:

• Create Visual outlines (mind/concept maps) of complex concepts, ideas and tasks

• Merge, convert, edit and share PDF documents

• Create and share online presentations

• Create, track and work on collaborative projects in real time

• Create and edit online forms, surveys, spreadsheets, diagrams, flowcharts, and Excel files

• Create stunning visual content

• Record, edit and share audio clips Make and share podcasts and mixes

• Create and share videos and animations

• Edit, crop, resize and fine-tune images

Teachers can make their classes more interactive and technological which provides motivation for your students to become autonomous because technology is their field of expertise and it makes them field like in a natural setting where anything is possible.
