Education Technology and the Twenty-First-Century Skills Gap

Education Technology and the Twenty-First-Century Skills Gap | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
All too often in many countries, students do not get the education they must have to prosper in the twenty-first century. Education technology can help close this skills gap.
Viljenka Savli (http://www2.arnes.si/~sopvsavl/)'s insight:

Education technology can complement existing and emerging pedagogical approaches such as project-based, experiential, inquiry-based, and adaptive learning methods, as well as facilitate the teaching of twenty-first-century skills such as communication, creativity, persistence, and collaboration. But much more can be done with education technology to develop higher-order competencies and character qualities.

How-To: Create Reading Guides for Students with iBook Tools - @ClassTechTips | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it

"One thing I love about iBooks is how easy it is to take notes and organize your thinking.

I’ve used iBooks to prepare reading guides for student book clubs. If your students are reading classic texts (Treasure Island, Jane Eyre, etc.) these books are free to download.  If students are going to read in a book club with hard copies of a text, you can purchase a copy on iBooks and prepare a reading guide for them. Here’s how:"

Using the iPad in the Music Classroom – National Association for Music Education (NAfME)

Using the iPad in the Music Classroom – National Association for Music Education (NAfME) | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
So, by now, unless you live under a rock, you have seen what an iPad can do for you as a teacher. This is my attempt to share a few of the things I do in my classroom with this wonderful piece of technology.

There are dozens if not hundreds of great music-based apps, and I will share a few of my favorites, but first, let’s talk about the basic features of the iPad that you can use out of the box.

One thing I use the video camera for is immediate feedback. It seems a bit obvious, but have you used the video camera to record your group and play it back to them? Immediate response. Don’t record a whole piece, just a passage. You can put it on a big screen if you have Apple TV or “AirPlay”. (This little gem of software is worth investigating).  I usually avoid recording kids faces, just follow the score so they are not visually distracted. Now make a list of the board (or the screen) of things they did well as a group, individually, etc. Then a contrasting list of things they need to improve.  There, your students just wrote four days of lesson plans for you! Lather, rinse, repeat.

Learning With Nature | Curiosity | Engagement | eSkills | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
In our time of fast-paced, exam-pressured, high-tech culture, where does learning with nature have a place?

When adults are asked to recall a time in their youth when they were happiest, invariably they refer to times spent outdoors and with friends.

Our clever screen world keeps us busy and on the go, but does not help us to communicate, feel loved, gain the satisfaction of the quiet mind, and relax. Time with others in nature does exactly that -- and much, much more!
