This School Has Bikes Instead Of Desks--And It Turns Out That's A Better Way To Learn - FastCompany

This School Has Bikes Instead Of Desks--And It Turns Out That's A Better Way To Learn - FastCompany | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it

Some classrooms at the school also have an extra bike in the corner, so kids who can't sit still don't have to. Teachers also use time on the bike as a "reward" that happens to benefit the students. Some classrooms at the school also have an extra bike in the corner, so kids who can't sit still don't have to. Teachers also use time on the bike as a "reward" that happens to benefit the students.Elementary school has always looked a little bit like training for a traditional office job: You show up at 8 or 9, sit at your desk, and fill out paperwork for most of the day. An average third grader might spend as much as six hours sitting in the classroom--only a little less time than the average office worker spends sitting at work. But as more offices realize that sitting all day long is actually pretty terrible for health and productivity, how long will it take schools to catch up?

While some elementary schools no longer have recess, and people like New Jersey Governor Chris Christie argue that school days should be even longer, a few schools are already moving in a different direction. Some are testing out standing desks, and realizing that a little bit of activity can actually improve attention spans. Others, like Ward Elementary in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, are starting to fill classrooms with exercise bikes, so students can work out while they learn.

Via John Evans
Viljenka Savli's insight:

I like this, as I believe sitting for 5 and more hours in the classroom (at least for me) doesn't inspire learning. I quote:

"Riding exercise bikes makes reading fun for many kids who get frustrated when they read," says Scott Ertl, who started the program. "They have a way to release that frustration they feel while they ride."

How Gamification is Used in ELearning - eLearning Industry | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
How Can You Implement Gamification Effectively Within Your eLearning Program? Check the How Gamification is Used in ELearning article to find more.
Viljenka Savli's insight:

Gamification is a popular term at the moment and it can be seen in numerous and diverse applications. The simplest definition of gamification is that its approach is to add typical elements of game playing (point scoring, competition with others, rules of play) to other areas of activity.

Nothing to add, only that it's quite tough to achieve good results if you have not got enough knowlede about it.

I liked this statements: ...I would like to suggest an alternative to this: ipedagogy. It seems rather a small change of just one letter, but it does change the focus rather fundamentally. "Social factors are coming to dominate learners’ interaction with text and other media, making a kind of communal constructivism and learning literacy, perhaps the single-most fundamental trend in “future learning.”

How to translate this into our everyday practice?

How Technology Trends Have Influenced the Classroom

How Technology Trends Have Influenced the Classroom | learning by using iPads | Scoop.it
Teachers all over America are faced with this challenge of keeping students engaged in the classroom when their world outside of school is one of constant engagement and stimulation. Knowing the world outside of our institutional walls is only one step in addressing modern learning styles. How to act and adjust schools today is the next step in making the classroom of today ready for tomorrow.
Viljenka Savli's insight:

I liked the statement: "Our students have access to a global audience and don’t have to write just to please one teacher. They can write based on what they see and believe to be true." and this is, I believe,  the fact that we have to bare in mind when preparing for lessons.

Emerging technologies such as cloud computing, augmented reality (AR) and 3D printing are paving the way for the future of education in ways we may have yet to see.
