10 Characteristics Of A Highly Effective Learning Environment

10 Characteristics Of A Highly Effective Learning Environment | Learning... | Scoop.it

"Wherever we are, we’d all like to think our classrooms are “intellectually active” places. Progressive learning (like our 21st Century Model, for example) environments. Highly effective and conducive to student-centered learning. But what does that mean?

The reality is, there is no single answer because teaching and learning are awkward to consider as single events or individual 'things'..."

Do we provide this environment

Ruby Day's curator insight, June 18, 3:24 PM

These criteria really outline some solid  principles that should direct our planning and thus be evident in our learning environments. Principles such as: student enquiry, work readiness, personalised learning, flexibility, authentic and transparent assessment. I like the focus on critical thinking here :)

Sue Alexander's curator insight, June 21, 5:02 PM

Great scoop Beth. I love the goal of "intellectually active" classrooms.

The People’s Guide to Spatial Thinking

The People’s Guide to Spatial Thinking | Learning... | Scoop.it

"One of our colleagues and leaders in spatial thinking in education, Dr. Diana Stuart Sinton, has written a book entitled The People’s Guide to Spatial Thinking, along with colleagues Sarah Bednarz, Phil Gersmehl, Robert Kolvoord, and David Uttal.  As the name implies, the book provides an accessible and readable way for students, educators, and even the general public to understand what spatial thinking is and why it matters.  It “help[s] us think across the geographies of our life spaces, physical and social spaces, and intellectual space.”  Dr. Sinton pulls selections from the NRC’s Learning to Think Spatially report and ties them to everyday life.  In so doing, she also provides ways for us in the educational community to think about teaching these concepts and skills in a variety of courses.   Indeed, as she points out, spatial thinking is particularly essential within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, as well as geography."  - See more at: ESRI's GIS Education Community blog.

MOOCs: Who’s using MOOCs? 10 different target audiences

MOOCs: Who’s using MOOCs? 10 different target audiences | Learning... | Scoop.it

The problem is that the decision makers often don’t have the marketing skills to differentiate between different addressable audiences. External adult learners may not want a long-winded, over-engineered, six to ten week course on anything. Life’s too short. Yet academics are used to producing courses of this semester length. What many may want are mini MOOCs. They may want them to be asynchronous starting and ending when convenient for them. This, of course, is exactly what’s happening. All in all, however, the good news is that MOOCs are forcing HE institutions to change. MOOCs may very well be the force that makes them more open, transparent and relevant. There will, of course, be a backlash, but the digital genie is out of the bottle - MOOCs are here to stay.

Teaching Through Trauma: How 1 LA school teaches despite poverty, trauma

Teaching Through Trauma: How 1 LA school teaches despite poverty, trauma | Learning... | Scoop.it

Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 15, 11:16 PM

How does poverty impact our students, especially students whom live in urban areas where trauma and stress have a significant impact on the developing brain?

Quoting from the post "Children living in poor neighborhoods are more likely to suffer traumatic incidents, like witnessing or being the victims of shootings, parental neglect or abuse. They also struggle with pernicious daily stressors, including food or housing insecurity, overcrowding and overworked or underemployed, stressed-out parents."

Yet it is possible to make a difference, and one school in Los Angeles is proving this with by working with teachers with this goal in mind "...to figure out how to “use positivity and relationships to reverse some of the negative effects of poverty.”

This link will take you to part 1 of this story and the link to part 2 is available in the story. You may also listen to each installment.
