The teaching and learning foundations of MOOCs

The teaching and learning foundations of MOOCs | Learning and Teaching Online | Scoop.it
The idea that massive open online courses (MOOCs) provide a less valid learning experience than face-to-face courses is a furphy. Here are some reasons why the critics are wrong.

Via Dr. Susan Bainbridge
António Maneira's insight:

That's it!

There is no strong apparent reason for MOOCs to be less valid then face-to-face courses.

It is an e-learning model for great numbers that in most cases attracts lots of people which is great to researchers as it increase significance of quantitative research studies.

Abi James's curator insight, June 3, 2013 9:33 AM

"Overall, the evidence is that there is no reason to believe that MOOCs provide any less a valid learning experience than face-to-face courses."

But are students prepared with the skills and tools needed to studt from online resources? The jump from classroom teaching to lectures is difficult enough but most students have no experience or strategies for learning from online courses without human interaction to guide them.

Why Do Students Enroll in (But Don’t Complete) MOOCs? | MindShift

Why Do Students Enroll in (But Don’t Complete) MOOCs? | MindShift | Learning and Teaching Online | Scoop.it

Less than 10 percent of MOOC students, on average, complete a course. That's the conclusion of Katy Jordan of Open University, who published her analysis, pul. (...) I’m not totally convinced yet that MOOCs will necessarily be completely disruptive to higher education.

Via Carlos Pinheiro
António Maneira's insight:

A list os several reasons for enrolling provides an idea of why MOOCs even exist. While enrollment and completion rates can be interpreted in multiple ways one clear idea is that competition in online learning industry is high and that the author is sceptical about the success of disruption in education coming from formal learning institutions.

Nuno Bernardo:  "As the habits of audiences continue to evolve from traditional to digital platforms like the internet, tablets and smartphones, content producers also need to commit their resources to understanding these platforms and the ways in which audiences can engage with content through them."

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, March 19, 12:07 PM

The logical extension of this is as audiences change, it is critical to set aside your assumptions about who they are and what they want and go find out.  This is why customer/audience persona development from a psychological perspective is so important.

Revolution Hits the Universities

Revolution Hits the Universities | Learning and Teaching Online | Scoop.it
Nothing has more potential to let us reimagine higher education than massive open online course, or MOOC, platforms.
António Maneira's insight:

This new aproach to higher education is indeed promissing. It is highly based in social networking combining live class, sincronous and assincronous tuturing and rich online contents. It is great to see how people organize themselves supporting each other in local communities even translating resourses to their native language so that more people can participate.

I am happy to see this kind of iniciative coming olso from a portuguese teacher.
