When is a learning designer a project manager? | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it

When is a learning designer a project manager? It is a question I have considered my entire career (well the part of it spent working in e-learning), and I am revisiting it now as I’m looking for opportunities in e-learning project management. Very timely, I came across a recent publication by Intentional Futures (2016), a group funded by the Bill and Melissa Gates Foundation. The report entitled “Instructional Design in Higher Education”, reported on the experience of instructional designers. At the same time a report by MIT, MIT online learning report also notes the importance of instructional designers.

The Millennial Learners | University of Venus

The Millennial Learners | University of Venus | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it

The change in the traits and needs of the learner is forcing the educational system to adapt to the learners, and not vice versa. EdTech has grown popular as Millennials have grown up in a dynamic and technology-driven environment. It features prominently in education. The approach to teaching the Millennial generation has also seen a change. With information being so easily available - just a Google search away, accessible anytime, anyplace - the role of a teacher is shifting to that of someone who facilitates learning.

Some of the buzzwords in the Millennial learning environment are personalized learning, edtech, self-paced learning, digital fluency and collaborative learning. Educators and technology mavens have risen to the challenge by providing several platforms of learning for students.

My Open Textbook: Pedagogy and Practice

My Open Textbook: Pedagogy and Practice | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it

I’ve spent some time talking about open pedagogy at several universities this Spring, and in each of those presentations and workshops, I have usually mentioned The Open Anthology of Earlier American Literature, an OER anthology that my students and I produced last year for an American literature survey course I taught. When I talk about the anthology, it’s usually to make a point about open pedagogy. I began the project with the simple desire to save my students about $85 US, which is how much they were (ostensibly) paying for the Heath Anthology of American Literature Volume A. Most of the actual texts in the Heath were public domain texts, freely available and not under any copyright restrictions. As the Heath produced new editions (of literature from roughly 1400-1800!), forcing students to buy new textbooks or be irritatingly out of sync with page numbers, and as students turned to rental markets that necessitated them giving their books back at the end of the semester, I began to look in earnest for an alternative.

Is Competency Based Education Worth the Investment? (EdSurge News)

Is Competency Based Education Worth the Investment? (EdSurge News) | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it

Over the past year or two, as the manic buzz about MOOCs settled down to a steady hum, many predicted that competency-based education (CBE) would follow as the next big thing in higher education. There are many variations on the theme of CBE, but Cali Morrison, the communications manager at the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies (WCET) offers a succinct definition: “self-paced, mastery-based education, often supported by technology.” Basically, learners must master and demonstrate competence on a predetermined array of assignments, tasks and skills in order to earn their degrees. This is in contrast to traditional degree programs, where students “show face” at class, virtually or in-person, over a fixed number of weeks, and earn passing grades to accumulate a minimum number of credits.

TeachThought: A Diagram Of Pedagogy in the 21st Century

TeachThought: A Diagram Of Pedagogy in the 21st Century | Learning and Teaching in an Online Environment | Scoop.it
We know that thinking in the 21st century seems different. What about teaching? Aside from the presence of dizzying technologies, added pressure for data-based improvements, and a persistent call for innovation, how is teaching different in 2016 than it was in, say, 1984?

Here are a few ideas as a kind of quick overview, with general summaries for each. I’ve added “tags” for each domain so that we can begin to see how existing and emerging initiatives (e.g., personalized learning), trends (e.g., the flipped classroom), and buzz words (e.g., digital footprint) might fit into each.
