How central is technology to modern college life? This infographic breaks it down. 
School libraries today feel increasing pressure to reinvent themselves in the face of increasing financial pressures, new media technologies, and a progressively media-savvy population. Their transformation from information reserve to knowledge center has been fast underway. This paper builds on that evolution to develop an argument for media literacy education as the pedagogical foundation for the learning commons model for school libraries. This would position the school library as a dynamic media literacy learning hub, anchoring entire schools around knowledge, expression, collaboration, and creation in both virtual and physical spaces. Conversation can occur in on-line forms, but does not much of the time because members do not engage in back and forth with each other. When collective elaboration occurs, both learning and performance are increased. 
Darrell West examines how new technologies such as blogs, social media, and video games improve education, and how schools and universities are using these tools to help students learn.

"The current emphasis on information literacy is an important step toward improving college education, but may present problems for raising general literacy levels across the nation. Information Literacy, as defined by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), is the ability to “recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information.” This, they point out, is an increasing challenge as the number and format of resources expands in the digital age." 
I use mindmaps with my students so they can literally see the information they read in the texts in a visual, connected, lateral form. "In a lab in Sussex a group of people have had their brainwaves scanned while completing a series of tasks, individually and in groups, to see if data visualisation - presenting information visually, in this case a series of mind maps - can help. The results showed that when tasks were presented visually rather than using traditional text-based software applications, individuals used around 20% less cognitive resources. In other words, their brains were working a lot less hard. As a result, they performed more efficiently, and could remember more of the information when asked later. Working in groups, they used 10% less mental resources." Via Howard Rheingold 
Students need to learn that using their real name online is not always a bad thing, it is part of creating a positive digital footprint that will be seen by others.
