What’s a character educator?

What’s a character educator? | Leading with Character | Scoop.it

One, that character matters no matter who you are or where you are. Two, that they might look at character education this way: If exercising builds strong muscles, then practicing the virtues of good behavior builds strong character. Three, one important way that our children learn character is from observing, imitating, and modeling what adults say and do.

This being the case, I remind them that they too are character educators.

Empathy, not just academics, key to success: Borba

Empathy, not just academics, key to success: Borba | Leading with Character | Scoop.it

Other countries might have more obvious concerns such as poverty, malnutrition, civil war or a high infant mortality, but the United States has as big a problem as exists anywhere in the world when it comes to empathy.

“In no area are American kids farther behind than with empathy,” said Michele Borba, an internationally acclaimed parenting and character education expert who recently returned from Colombia and Nicaragua.

Research shows that aggression is up in American children, and it’s starting a lot earlier, Borba said.

Parents, Teachers, and the Blame Game

Parents, Teachers, and the Blame Game | Leading with Character | Scoop.it

"We in the US are blaming teachers pathologically at this point, and not just for too many kids taking remedial courses in college. We are actually blaming them for the eventual downfall of the United States of America. That’s heavy stuff. Meanwhile, not a peep is heard about parents’ or communities’ roles in forming kids. It’s not even okay to think the things I wrote indicating some parents are to blame. People believe that perceived flaws in the condition of the American youth are 'the teachers’ fault' principally because teachers rarely challenge that narrative. Such an acquiescence to blame leads to a public misconception about the power of teachers to easily overcome terrible home situations; it also encourages a willingness among some parents to punt on parenting and leave character education in the laps of people who only see the children for 180 days a year, typically in large groups, and who never sit down for a meal with them. If we’re going to blame one another, let’s blame one another. Are there bad teachers? Of course. Now, are there bad parents? Do bad teachers negatively impact the educational outcomes of their students? Certainly. Do bad parents?" | by John Kuhn

Aaron Louis Buduan's curator insight, August 22, 2015 9:04 AM

Character Education or Values Education should start at home. Parents nowadays tend to pass all the responsibilities of educating their children to the school. We all know for a fact that schools are the second home. But, isn't it right if the parents educate their children first before sharing responsibilities with the school? This Blame Game will not solve anything if we will just ask, who is more responsible for the way the youth acts nowadays?
