In an op-ed for USA Today (9/16), Solomon Friedberg, chair of the Math Department at Boston College, defends Common Core math standards, arguing that they encourage students to learn math “with both computational fluency and understanding of the ideas,” thereby eliminating “the need for endless rule-memorizing” and providing “the intellectual flexibility to apply math in new situations.”

New Standards for Ed Leaders: What do they look like?

"WHAT DOES GOOD LEADERSHIP LOOK LIKE? The Council of Chief State School Officers and the National Policy Board for Educational Administration are asking for public comment on a draft of voluntary standards centered on education leadership. The draft is an update to a set of leadership standards adopted in 2008 [http://bit.ly/1rUxElA]. The new set reflects increased demands placed on school and district leaders. Since the first set of leadership standards were released in 1996, state-level reform measures have raised the bar for student growth and academic achievement, the groups say in a statement. Race to the Top, waivers from No Child Left Behind and the implementation of new academic standards have all led states to rethink education leadership. More than 1,000 principals and superintendents offered their input for the creation of the draft standards. The two groups are asking for comment until Oct. 10. To the left you have a box that shows that students take in content by reading, writing, listening and experiencing, and that to comprehend and interpret content they must have prior knowledge, make observations, identify main and supporting ideas and gather evidence.

In the middle section the student has to take the input and use critical thinking skills. To do this they must also be engaged in and committed to the learning process. 

And the final section looks at their output, how does the student show what they have learned.

In all phases technology may play a role.

In addition, about 8 percent of teachers reported leaving the profession in 2012-13.


Here's a rundown of some of the data:

  • Of the 3.4 million public school teachers teaching in 2011-12, the data suggest that 84 percent stayed at their schools, 8 percent went to a different school, and 8 percent left the profession during the following year.
  • Teachers in years 1-3 of teaching were more likely to move to a different school (13 percent), but actually less likely to leave the profession altogether (7 percent), in contravention of the conventional wisdom. 
  • Of particular interest, of teachers who left the teaching profession in 2012-13, 51 percent said they had a more manageable work load and 53 percent reported better working conditions in their current positions.

During her 10 years as West Port principal, Ellspermann has ushered in a pervasive college-going culture built on personalization. At West Port, lunchtime is “PowerHour,” a student empowerment initiative that Ellspermann launched to grant students autonomy over an hour of their school day for academic enrichment, open labs, clubs, and other creative opportunities. Three years of PowerHour has produced a more personalized and successful school environment: course failure has nearly disappeared, the graduation rate has risen 15 points, and participation in activities has increased from 10% to nearly 70%.  Ellspermann holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Georgia and a master’s degree in education from the University of Florida.

Mel Riddile's insight:

After returning to her school from attending POY events in Washington, D.C., Jayne goes right back to work leading a PD session two days later.


Jayne understands that in order to raise teacher and student expectations and build willpower Mindsets must be addressed.

Graduation rates up, but more work needed to prevent dropouts

U.S. graduation rates reached a historic high of over 80 percent in 2012—an increase of about 8 percent over the past decade, says America’s Promise Alliance.

Mel Riddile's insight:
  1. Toxic environments. Many students who leave school are navigating a negative environment at home or in the community. For example, they have personal and family health issues or are the victims of violence at home.
  2. Relationships with others. If a student does not have a connection with a teacher, guidance counselor, coach or parent, they may find a sense of belonging in gang membership or with other peers who are making bad decisions.
  3. Lack of support. Young people who leave school are resilient, but need help re-engaging with their education. “The salience of school isn’t there because of what’s happening outside the school building, and they aren’t finding the supports they need within school,” Zaff says. Adults who take an interest in the student’s success are key to getting the student to return to school, he adds.

1). Trying to keep straight a different set of classroom expectations, procedures, and beliefs about learning for several different teachers.

2). Lots of sitting only to be followed up by more sitting. A majority of a student's day is comprised of sitting in an uncomfortable chair. 


3). Lots of being talked 'at' rather than being talked 'with.'

4). Other kids in class who purposefully derail and consume large amounts of attention and time from the teacher which leaves other kids feeling like they aren't important or don't deserve any of the teacher's time.

Students transition from traditional bullying to cyber bullying as they grow up, a new study says.


Wang did find consistency in the type of bullying students engaged in. While traditional bullying decreased as students got older, cyberbullying increased. There was also a considerable increase in bullying from fifth to sixth grade, which Wang believes is due to the transition from elementary to middle school.

"The study also found that girls were more likely to experience verbal and cyberbullying while boys were more likely to experience physical bullying."


Principals Take Notice


The culture of a school has a lot to do with the amount of bullying. After 9/11 NPR asked several of our Muslim students about how they had been treated. They replied,"Our principal announced that our school would not tolerate intolerance." They went on to report that they had received no mistreatment. Parents set the tone in the home and principals set the tone in a school. Kids learn what we yeah them, whether or not it is our intent to teach. Nothing is an accident.
