Fake-World Math: When Mathematical Modeling Goes Wrong and How to Get it Right

Fake-World Math: When Mathematical Modeling Goes Wrong and How to Get it Right | Leading learning | Scoop.it
Fake-World Math was the keynote I gave for most of 2014. It looks at mathematical modeling as it’s defined in the Common Core, practiced in the world of knowledge work, and maligned in print textbooks.

Despite their flaws, Common Core tests are designed to require critical thinking.

Chryste's insight:

Any move toward assessments that measure what is taught in the classroom is welcomed, but I hope we eventually re-consider authentic tasks selected and scored at the local level in conjunction with more standardized measures to paint a fuller picture of what students can do  and have learned.

For example, in the late 90's we were using a portfolio system where each student needed to have written a paper in each genre that scored proficiently or higher on state agreed-upon rubric (sometimes called the 6-traits rubric) to be considered as fully achieving this standard. This evidence was looked at alongside the state administered and scored writing piece which painted a fuller picture of the student's actual achievement in writing.

Teaching for Robust Understanding in Mathematics

This rubric gives teachers and coaches an honest way to analyze the mathematics experiences students have in the classroom. It has the potential to be a game changer for kids by giving all of them access to teachers who spend instructional time taking actions that matter for student learning.
