Many of the lessons learned in fatherhood apply, on a certain level, to change leadership. Here are the parallels between building a complex LEGO set and coaching a client through transformational change.

This article is right on target when it comes to understanding the importance of communicating a vision as a leader to enable others to see the outcome you want them to achieve.  I’ve actually used Legos to teach my leadership teams this lesson.   Splitting the team up into small groups of 2 - 3 leaders each, I gave each group the same set of Legos but minus the box and any instructions.  I then asked each group to build what they think they should with their set of Legos.  As you can imagine, even though each group had the exact same set of Legos, without the picture on the box and the set of instructions, each group built a totally different structure in the end.  Next, I handed each group the box with the picture of what the Legos put together should look like with the instructions, and this time each group was able to complete the task of building the exact same structure.  This was a great way to illustrate to my leadership teams that without a clear vision of where you are going and a plan to get there, even though you may have very capable and well-intended employees, your chances of getting everyone to the same place for business success may be “slim to none”.

My biggest strength—and therefore, my biggest flaw—is that I’m a perfectionist.

If I’m doing something, even if it’s a blog post or a small freebie for promotional purposes, I’m going to make sure that it’s something I’m proud of putting my name on. I don’t take shortcuts and I don’t like people who do. This means that I’m often overworked and overwhelmed (link is external), but it also means that I, at least in my own head, feel that I’m kickass. (It’s also why I’ve learned to say no to a lot of things.)

Interesting article and very relevant to leadership decision making today.  As leaders we have to better weigh the options when anticipating the need and opportunity to "lead in the moment" versus waiting until all our "t's" are crossed and "i's" are dotted. Maybe Nike was also onto something that could improve a leaders influence in the right situation when they said "Just Do It"! The bottom-line is, leaders have to be careful not to "overthink" the small decisions or "underthink" the bigger ones is they want to truly be influential.
