Content and Context are important factors to consider.  This video provides some good information that helps when distinguishing between the two.

 

I would add that content is typically shaped by the context in which it is taken in.  How certain content impacts an organizations unique needs is where context comes into play.  

 

Which is more important?  Both....it depends on what you are trying to accomplish....

Getting to the root cause means digging deeper into information to determine what really is the issue.  I love the example here of the broken wrist and the doctor.... don't treat the symptom (the pain) without fixing the real problem... the broken bone.

 

This article also points to some good tools to help along the way... cause and effect diagrams, and the 5 whys are integral to the process and will result in a focused fix on the problems identified.

Personally not surprised here.  Empathy and involvement with people once again are clearly key items in interactions.  Clearly noted is that "Balance should rule the day - and leadership development...it's important not to let one skill outshine another."


In the end, "...without the ability to engage people, great business schemes aren't worth the slide shows they're projected in."


How is your empathy?  Do you demonstrate forgiveness and compassion? Do you seek to involve others?


If you answered low or no to the above questions, you might wish to focus some energy in strengthening these skills.

Whether the boss at their first job, a professor during college, or a family friend, many people find someone to help navigate the trials and tribulations of starting a career. And now, it's your turn.
Chris Brown's insight:

Seven qualities of an effective mentor include some that are challenging.  One that is noted here is being prepared...mentors are not opportunities to give a "stream-of-consciousness" lecture, but is meant to be a relationship that helps share knowledge and build skills. 


This article provides some great thoughts in each of the qualities that they identified and each of these can be used to deepen the quality of mentor that we are.


After reading the article, follow up by focusing on one of the key qualities for a couple of weeks.  Seek feedback about how that quality is manifested in you, then identify those areas that you can improve and work to improve them.  


Once you have a good understanding of these qualities and where you are with each, consider using the list of qualities as a mental checklist to help you become an effective mentor.

Listening is actually one of the fundamental aspects of communication, and calling it out as a separate discussion adds emphasis on it's importance.  Listening becomes a lynch pin to communication.  And...good communication means that you have "connected" with a person to share a message...hence, Empathy is a key component.

 

If you focus on these three areas, you will be successful in leading others.

For me, employee engagement is about how we as individuals navigate life in the workplace. For me, engagement is all about the freedom and gratification provided by taking responsibility for our own lives. Dan Pink’s book Drive sums this up as autonomy, purpose and mastery, and I think that’s a good way of looking at it.

Engagement is employee and company responsibility.  The company needs to provide the opportunity, tools, and vision...the employee needs to see the connection of what they do and the organization and desire to master their skills to accomplish.

Managers struggle with communications, especially giving feedback.  Leaders may fear hurting people's feelings and that fear makes the leaders nervous.  "Our nerbousenss causes us to tense up and over-dramatize the conversation ... which in turn creates an environment of conflict."

 

How do we overcome this?  Focus on these:

  • Be Direct...Be Kind
  • Listen
  • Don't make it personal
  • Show up, be present
  • Inspire greatness
