3 Things you Forgot About Motivating People

3 Things you Forgot About Motivating People | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

When we think about motivation we tend to imagine people bounding around, smiling and excited to make things happen. That's not a bad thing, but it's not much of a recipe for long-term productivity in a work place. While I’m all for a healthy dose of inspiration, there are three things which are completely underestimated in their ability to motivate employees, and all available without delivering a stirring speech

My experience in School over the last few years was there seemed to be an overwhelming desire to have a party line that everyone adhered to. This included areas such as using digital technologies, the use of 7 Habits, stripped down professional learning communities, etc. Anyone who spoke up was branded a complainer and boat rocker.

ORConsulting's curator insight, July 21, 5:49 AM

'the longest journey any leader can take, is from controlling to trusting'. A great little article, discussing leaders trusting their employees, and also looking at the role of hiring 'rebels', who challenge the status quo, and can play an important role in change in modern organisations. A 3 min read.

Are You Treating Customers Like Family? Two Lessons From Red Lobster and Frontier Airlines | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it
VideoTwo acts of corporate kindness hit the news last week. The first involved a delayed flight on Frontier Airlines and the second a touching dinner at Red Lobster. Actions speak louder than words. Eighty percent of our judgements about people, companies and brands comes down to two factors: warmth and competence. Are you willing to go above and beyond the transaction to create a Human Brand? Are you ready like Red Lobster and Frontier to build warmth into your brand DNA and allow your employees to demonstrate that they care?

David Hain's curator insight, July 18, 1:53 AM

People believe actions, not words.  And sometimes the small things are the big things...corporate kindness doesn't need big budgets, maybe big hearts and minds?

6 Reasons “Over” Investing in Training Will Make You Millions

6 Reasons “Over” Investing in Training Will Make You Millions | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

Invest more in training your team now. Times are tough. Everyone is looking for a way to shear costs so we can make the next payroll or afford the next rent check. There are many ways to point your meat cleaver to cut the fat in your organization. Don't cut training. Despite conventional wisdom, double downing on training right now will help your team accomplish tasks and succeed. This rare strategy will generate millions in profits, positioning your company to thrive. At my company, we invest 8-10% of employee salaries on training. This is a huge investment in the middle of uncertain times, however this will make our prospects certain because we will have the best talent in the industry.

From the article

There is one thing you can control, which is your response to others. Reacting, overreacting or letting it fester are not great methods of response. If this is your method of coping with hurt and offense, trust me, you need a new one! Repeating the cycle of offense only intensifies each time you are provoked.

donhornsby's curator insight, July 23, 10:16 AM

(From the article): Our culture is excessively hot-tempered to the point hot-tempered has become the norm. But if you can stay in control of your anger, you have the power to CALM a dispute! Allowing yourself to be provoked will just add to fuel to that hot-burning fire.

Are You Spending Enough Time With Your Boss?

Are You Spending Enough Time With Your Boss? | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

If you only rarely see your boss, it’s time to get on her calendar. A new study claims that spending just the right amount of time with your supervisor might make you happier at work.

A study released Wednesday by leadership training and research company LeadershipIQ found a correlation between time spent with a direct supervisor and employees’ levels of work-related inspiration, engagement and motivation.

Researchers found that those levels peak for workers who spend six hours a week with the boss.

Beyond six hours, benefits decreased for many workers. Mark Murphy, founder and CEO of Leadership IQ, said too much time with a boss can become counterproductive or irritating.

The role of conventional leadership is frequently depicted as one who takes charge, makes decisions, delegates tasks, and is otherwise disconnected from those in less authoritative positions. In a professional environment, this person might be known as the Big Boss that is somehow set apart from his or her subordinates. They’re “up there” and we’re “down here” type of thing.

Do You Feel Pressure Or Do You Apply Pressure?

Do You Feel Pressure Or Do You Apply Pressure? | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

One obvious yet under-appreciated law of business physics is:

For any given company, the larger the company becomes, the more opportunities emerge to screw it up.

Another obvious but not well-understood law:

The more screwed up your company, the more people will complain about it and blame you.

If we take these two together, it is easy to see that without intervention, the larger your company becomes, the more people will complain and blame you.
