Think Before You Criticize

Think Before You Criticize | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

Criticism can have a huge and sometimes crushing impact on people. Too often, in our anger and displeasure, we lash out and tell people what we think of their performance or judgment. Whatever the situation, think carefully before you choose your words.

20 World-Class Presentation Experts Share Their Top Tips

20 World-Class Presentation Experts Share Their Top Tips | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

Have you ever sat through a presentation that seemed to slog on and on? Presenters that are disorganized, dwell on trivial information and give long winded explanations that lead nowhere?

Too many presentations are afflicted by poor planning and poor visuals. The audience who come to see these presentations, pay attention for a few minutes then retreat to their mobile phones. As much as we hope that the next presentation will be different, they rarely are.

Miklos Szilagyi's curator insight, August 17, 8:20 AM

Well, it's good that we are speaking about this... I agree most of the points... though it's a good occasion to  raise one controversial point (controversial to me...)...

In this post you read about the "roles" in the two activities as follows:

Mentoring: Talking with a person who has identified his needs prior to entering into a mentoring relationship. The emphasis is on active listening, providing information, making suggestions, and establishing connections.Coaching: Talking to a person, identifying what he needs, and developing an action plan. The emphasis is on instruction, assessing, and monitoring.

Now, my point is that if something is not coaching, then, instruction is definitely not part of it.  And active listening which is - rightly because the good mentor works in coaching mode most of the time - enumerated as a mentoring feature is the one of the most important elements of the coaching process. I just want to show these two crying points which I firmly disagree.

By the way, it's more common than perhaps you think. In one of my favourite contingent management model, the situational leadership also the word "coaching" i sometimes wrongly handled. There are acc. to the model  4 phases of leadership: telling-selling-participating-delegating... now, sometimes for the "selling" (high task-high relationship/behaviour setup) one uses "coaching" which is - IMHO - flatly wrong. It is the phase when "mentoring" would much more appropriate (covering only a part of the mentoring job which is mainly toward career, etc). And, more or less it is the  "participating" phase (low task-high relationship/behaviour setup) which has rather much common features with the  coaching process, I would call it after that...

All the other points are rather fine...

Let it go. Since the beginning of time, those three words have never been repeated more frequently by more people or in more places than they have since the release of Frozen. Whatever else   Elsa was singing about, however, she may as well have been delivering her primary message – let it go – to the modern manager.

On Leadership, Fear and The Under Use of Power

On Leadership, Fear and The Under Use of Power | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

When we think of the misuse of power, our thoughts inevitably fly to the headline grabbers: the tyrants and bullies, schemers and scammers, or our first boss or sixth grade teacher.  Yet surprisingly, some of the biggest power problems stem from under use, not overuse of power.

How Those Who Challenge You Help to Make You More Successful

How Those Who Challenge You Help to Make You More Successful | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

Are you feeling uninspired and stuck at work? Perhaps it's the people around you. It's nice to have colleagues who support us and are of like mind – they boost our confidence and allow us to relax. We develop a network of people with whom we like to work because we know their styles and they know ours.

It’s comfortable and expedient and it works.

 Healthy conflict, differing perspectives

Unfortunately, that level of comfort can stall the very learning and innovation that can expand our careers and our companies, says Kevin Daum, author of ROAR! Get Heard in the Sales and Marketing Jungle.

Leadership: The cult that led to bad management

Leadership: The cult that led to bad management | Leadership with a splash of empathy | Scoop.it

'Leader' is an odd word when it comes to management. It’s a bit phoney and exaggerated but does it also lead to dysfunctional behaviour? What do you do for a living? I’m a ‘leader’. Cue laughter and ridicule. Have you ever heard anyone in an organisation say, 'We need to ask our 'Leader'?' - only if it was with sneering sarcasm.
