There were 7 “principles”:

Integrity
Commitment
Dependability
Teamwork
Responsiveness
Gratitude
Community
It was like a gift from heaven. I thought “My goodness, there were several that had been parked in my brain, ready for something like this to put it all in context. Wow! This is it.” I decided that I’d try to adopt them lock, stock and barrel for our use, since I didn’t think there were copyright problems with any of those words, and quickly got our CEO’s approval.

The marketing department created a little “gift” for each employee that represented each of the values – things like coffee mugs, mouse pads, and wristbands. We wanted to introduce them to everyone one at a time, over seven weeks, and reinforce them with the gift.

We went ahead with purchasing all the gifts (and it was a lot of stuff, filling up several of our closets in our corporate office in NY) and right around the time we were going to launch the first value, I got a phone call from my boss.

“Hold up, change in plan”

“What?! We’re ready to go here!”

The mood at Davos was the most divergent it has been in years. Some American bosses were notably bullish about accelerating economic growth and a regime change in fiscal, regulatory and trade policies. Others, particularly some European policy makers, were markedly downbeat. But whoever you spoke with, the intense political and economic challenges from populism, globalization, disruptive technology, the migration crisis and inequality dominated debates. While consensus was less confident on how to navigate the risks, it likely acts as a catalyst to drive change.
Conversation was dominated not only by who was there, but by who was not. President Trump was the dark matter of Davos. Dark matter is not well understood but occupies 95% of the universe and has huge gravitational pull. The implications of Trump’s presidency reverberated around Davos.

The primary jobs of the leader or business sponsor are to do the following:

Ensure the transformation is defined in terms of business outcomes.
Sell the vision of the new transformation across the business at every opportunity.
Keep the team focused on the business objectives and stop scope creep from taking them off task.
Engage the team and the right leadership to drive the transformation
Facilitate getting the right information up to the sponsor and back down to the team executing the transformation, so that everyone can make smart, business-oriented decisions.
Break down the barriers that naturally form when the status quo is challenged.
To properly execute the project, the right leader also needs to assemble the right team, which includes appropriate representation from all stakeholders as well as a day-to-day project leader experienced in transformation project management.

In a digital world, one of the biggest risks is not taking risks.
This is not easy for incumbent companies to achieve. In fact, our clients tell us that the main bottleneck in digital transformations is the lack of a strong and common culture. A quarter of the companies we polled report that their biggest challenge is a culture averse to risk and experimentation, while another 20% find a lack of a common understanding of the company culture is a major impediment to digital success.

Three steps to overcoming cultural barriers

So how do you get your culture in line with your digital strategy? We tested multiple cultural elements in our study, and found that prioritizing the following three areas has the biggest impact on easing the bottlenecks.

Support from the top: It’s now widely understood that a digital transformation needs active CEO support throughout the journey. This top-down support, however, has to go beyond the chief executive. Companies should start by putting a chief digital officer in charge of the full digital agenda. Truly changing culture, moreover, requires that support for a digital reinvention flow through the management hierarchy right down to every front-line employee, so the full organizational pyramid is tuned towards digital. All leaders need to shift their style from top-down decision-maker to coach.

Be a shepherd. You know how things get done. Whether your company is loosely organized or big on formal processes, you have learned how to navigate the steps necessary to get the resources you need, achieve buy-in from stakeholders and make things happen. As a leader, the next step is to guide others through those secret and not-so-secret moves required for success. Relationships are critical to great leadership, so help set others on a similar path.
Be a mentor. As a manager, sometimes it can be all-consuming just making sure the day-to-day tasks get done. It can be tempting to focus any remaining energy on the underachievers, making sure they get the skills and motivation they need to get up to speed. Inspiring others to become great leaders, however, requires that we spend time mentoring the rising stars on the team – making sure they have the tools they need to grow and achieve.
Be an investor. We may be lured into spending training dollars, development days and our precious attention on minimum skills and basic knowledge. Instead, consider who on your team could benefit from executive coaching, leadership conferences or in-house opportunity. Investing your own and the company’s time on the best and brightest can be as simple as allowing them to work with the bigger players in your organization -- high-profile projects, committees or even presentations you might otherwise do yourself. Invest in your employees' futures and watch them grow.
