My sense is that Boards have a fiduciary duty to be more inclusive in their development of next generation leaders. The war to attract and develop talent that is better then the talent in your competitors demand it. Moreover, the broader the talent pool the lower the risk of Boards being boxed into agreeing excessive remuneration for top executives.

My sense is that a foundation is consistent, visible support from top management so that innovation  (and its failures as well as successes) is felt part of an enterprise's DNA.  "innovation should come from all corners of your organization — make sure you are seeking out diverse perspectives and engaging the curious people in your organization who think about problems bigger than themselves." particularly resonated with me.

What is more, enterprises that develop a strong sense of shared values have a better foundation for effective involvement of people win both fleshing out the vision and then the developing and implementing the actions needed to secure value from implementing the vision.  Developing such shared values across the enterprise is less of a challenge when the enterprise is small
