The Stanford History Education Group has amassed some great resources for social studies teachers.  Their chief resources is a program called Reading Like a Historian.  The program has 71 stand-alone lessons for U.S. History organized within 11 units. These lessons span colonial to Cold War America and cover a range of political, social, economic, and cultural topics. They are continuing to expand the Reading Like a Historian program to World History.  Currently there are 15 lessons from across the world history sequence with more lesson plans under development that will be released in the next few months.

I know that most of my readers are in-service teachers as opposed to pre-service teachers, but I thought it was still worth sharing.  Several schools have noticed that without geography classes, social studies teachers have difficulty becoming certified without some core geographic content.  As a part of job at the Alliance coordinator for the Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance, I'm giving a workshop tonight at Salve Regina University designed to strengthen pre-service teachers geographic content as outlined on the Praxis Exam.  I have  prepared these materials with that audience in mind, but if there is anything you find useful, please use it or share it with those that could use it (local School of Education, Alliance, etc).  Most of the images in the presentation are hyperlinked to articles, videos and infographics that I have posted here in the past.   Here is the link to the other parts of the test.

Are you a high school teacher looking for some funds for your classroom?  The My Community, Our Earth: Global Connections and Exchange Program (PDF) is connecting high school students in the U.S. with their peers abroad (in Bolivia, Ghana, Nicaragua and the Philippines) through virtual online meetings.  The Association of American Geographers is especially eager to have AP Human Geography teachers participate in this program.  These meetings are arranged through online video conferences, online phone calls and chat sessions using Skype. The purpose of these meetings is to stimulate thinking and collaboration between high school students across international borders around sustainable development themes such as climate change, green economy, food security and hazards and vulnerability, while enriching cultural literacy. We are looking for formal and informal educators in the U.S., at the high school level, who would like to participate with us.
