Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners

Heutagogy: designing for self-directed learners | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
While acknowledging that the whole concept of self-determination – or ‘Google
learning’ as it has been called, pejoratively, in certain circles – is fraught with the potential for missing the point, being distracted into rabbit warrens or just getting bad information, we would like to emphasise that this is only a potential.

===> Any learning theory is only as good as the way in which it is applied and worked through, and we have seen it produce highly successful results where correctly applied, in the right circumstances. <===

Watch this space for chapter and verse, as we will soon be publishing case studies of several recent programmes that feature high levels of learner self-direction.

Learners are changing, learning is changing – and heutagogy can give important clues about rebalancing the burden of responsibilities and permissions in an always-on, networked, instructorless, post-course world.

Big Data really is and has meant is a revolutionary approach to marketing. It is our behavior online that helps brands and organizations learn about us in ways that they can contextualize and apply to their marketing strategies, and from the time that this became so eerily apparent, marketers have been seeking out ways to exploit it.

There are two intertwined definitions of education and only one is included here. Educare is leading students out of child. Educere is allowing students to gain control over their learning and realizing they have support when needed. We have eliminated the latter replacing it with the instrumental version called learning which is what School is about.

There is no doubt that social media provide excellent ways to communicate with parents, but they are not the only ways. It is one way that includes face-to-face conversations. It would be interesting to find out what Derrida might conclude in using his concept differance which was not a correctly spelled word.

Things Get Weird When Objects Get Hooked up to the Internet

Things Get Weird When Objects Get Hooked up to the Internet | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
Thermostats are just the start.

With the flood of new connected services and devices on the market, knowing how future users might hook them together or find unexpected new uses is a challenge, no matter what Silicon Valley’s confident young bucks may tell us. A service called IFTTT is giving us an interesting peek into the practical, clever and slightly weird ways people want to use the Internet of Things (IoT).

As a user-friendly dashboard that allows non-experts to fit feeds from favorite media, utilities (like cloud storage, social networks, home devices) and wearables in new combinations, or “recipes,” IFTTT is putting a broad array of tech in people’s hands for experimentation. Think of it as a friendly front end to the myriad of data connections and mashup of programming it would normally require to get our favorite apps and devices to talk together.

Users can do things are practical, like backup certain tagged photos to the cloud, find out when an apartment is available or highly personal, such as satisfying secret Kardashian fetishes.
