Creating Music with iPads - iPad and Technology in Music Education

Creating Music with iPads - iPad and Technology in Music Education | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

"One area that I don’t have time to explore very often during the school year is creating music on my iPad. It seems with all the day to day activities of teaching that I totally loose touch with musical explorations and composing. I’ve been taking more time lately to do this and I am floored at what I can do with an iPad and a few apps. I am not going to give you a history lesson here but I will say that at one time in my career I dreamed of creating a wonderful MIDI lab outfitted with computers, keyboards, speakers and mixers for my students to use. That dream never happened because of the crazy cost involved. My dream has been reshaped. Here is what I’ve found…."

Wonderful technological developments, making music creating accessbile and engaging for everyone.

Cristian Barkan's curator insight, December 9, 2013 12:10 PM

I think this is pretty cool, if you have a iPad you can make music by just downloading apps.  You can take a iPad anywhere, you can be bored, or sitting somewhere ust waiting and  you can just pulled out your ipad and start making music and that is of course if you are into music.

It is part of where we might need to go, but does not eliminate the role of teachers. What it means for school is a different question.

Kim Flintoff's comment, July 6, 2013 8:54 PM
It is part of where we might need to go (Many of us have alreay departed for these shores) AND (not "but") does not eliminate the roles of teachers (it will mean teachers need to think quite differently about what it means to "teach"). What it means for schools is a different question (any more different than the usual demand to get out of the way of shifts in teaching practice and stop delaying change for so,long that it creates many more problems in the long run?)

18 iPad uses: How classrooms are benefiting from Apple's tablets

18 iPad uses: How classrooms are benefiting from Apple's tablets | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

iPads are quickly becoming a popular and powerful educational tool for classrooms. Beyond the immediate benefit of engaging students, iPads can improve education efficiency and standards. However, many teachers are unsure of how to use them effectively. Coupled with concerns over the costs involved, iPad implementation in schools is seen as an unnecessary and expensive risk.

As the case studies below demonstrate, iPads are being used in education environments around the world with great success. Teachers can have paperless classrooms, take attendance, share interactive presentations and test their students—all on their iPad.

So just what are they doing? Education Dive has compiled a list:

Why Teaching Helps Students Learn More Deeply

Why Teaching Helps Students Learn More Deeply | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
For thousands of years, people have known that the best way to understand a concept is to explain it to someone else. “While we teach, we learn,” said the Roman philosopher Seneca.

Students enlisted to tutor others, these researchers have found, work harder to understand the material, recall it more accurately and apply it more effectively. In a phenomenon that scientists have dubbed “the protégé effect,” student teachers score higher on tests than pupils who are learning only for their own sake.

But how can children, still learning themselves, teach others? One answer: They can tutor younger kids. The benefits of this practice were indicated by a pair of articles published in 2007 in the journals Science and Intelligence.

The studies concluded that first-born children are more intelligent than their later-born brothers and sisters and suggested

===> that their higher IQs result from the time they spend showing their younger siblings the ropes. <===
