Varhaiset perustaidot ennustavat lukutaidon ja matematiikan osaamista neljännellä luokalla — Jyväskylän yliopisto

Eeva Kurttila-Matero's curator insight, May 23, 1:03 AM

Erityisesti parhaiten osaavien oppilaiden lukutaidon ja matematiikan osaamisen kehittymistä on tuettu kotona jo ennen kouluikää. Näille lapsille on merkittävästi muita oppilaita useammin luettu kirjoja, ja heidän kanssaan on leikitty ja pelattu kirjain-, sana- ja numeropelejä. Edelleen hyvät lukijat pitävät lukemisesta muita neljäsluokkalaisia enemmän.

Over the past couple of years 'MOOCs' (massive open online courses) have become the latest trend in the attempt to harness the power of online learning. MOOCs though, just like other forms of online learning have suffered from very high drop out rates.

I discovered ThingLink while teaching one of my online art classes.  It is a great tool for any blended learning environment, but was extremely useful for my 100% online class.  Students were able to annotate images to provide commentary on symbolism, artist intent, and historical context on the precise areas of the image where the comments were relevant.

Why Mindful Individuals Make Better Decisions

Why Mindful Individuals Make Better Decisions | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

Mindfulness is practiced in board rooms from Silicon Valley to Wall Street. But just how much does it improve the quality of your decision-making?

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 27, 10:38 PM

Mindfulness does not improve bottom lines unless it improves the person practicing the practice and make for a better world. Mindfulness is compassionate and is directed towards a better world. Thinking about meditation is a key component; the opposite is premeditation. What does that bring up. For example, in School we calculate what is important in advance and write curricula. That calculation is premeditated and does not require being mindful and attentive to this particular child's needs. Chogyam Trungpa suggested the practice on the mat prepares us for the real practice in life.

When we talk about how our education system is failing our students, there are a lot of different options presented on how to ‘fix’ it. Everyone has an answer, a promising new way of thinking, a potential magic bullet. Inevitably, we also examine school systems that are working as a part of investigating what to do …

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, July 27, 10:25 PM

I rarely assigned homework. It seemed counter-productive and counter-intuitive. The exception, if can be called homework, were projects which engaged students and their parents at home. This provided an untapped resource, excited students and parents, and was highly successful. I always provided more time for these projects so they did not work against learning.

Pay attention to #4

  1. Background knowledge is a key to learning.
  2. The idea that students no longer need to know information when they can "google it" is a myth.
  3. The more you know about a particular subject, the faster you acquire new knowledge about that subject.
  4. The more vocabulary words possessed by a student, the faster and better that student reads, comprehends and applies new knowledge.

Twenty terrible reasons for lecturing

One reason for lecturers not responding to their everyday experience is, I believe, their ignorance of alternatives. If you can't imagine what else you might do than lecture, then it hardly matters what your everyday experience is telling you. Lecturing is taken for granted. Courses are designed around lecture topics. Knowledge is packaged in our heads in one-hour-lecture-sized chunks. Why is this?
