IPad Teaching and Learning

IPad Teaching and Learning | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

`Beginning in our next school year, we are very excited to implement iPads (iPad2 devices) as a tool for collaborative learning in our English and Media faculty. We believe that the technology can enhance our pedagogy, whilst engaging our students in the basics of reading, writing and speaking & listening. We believe that the devices can harness excitement and confidence in our students, unleashing greater creativity and raising literacy standards. By using Apple TV, we will use the devices as a tool for formative assessment, immediately streaming student responses, writing, annotation or presentations and films etc. We are not going for the 1-to-1 model, instead the device will be used as a collaborative tool in groups. A class set will effectively be 7 to 8 iPads.``

It is interesting and pleasing to note that more people are looking to use digital technologies to address appropriate predefined learning goals that may differ from those that best suit traditional learning goals and pen and paper technologies.

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers

Alternatives To Homework: A Chart For Teachers | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
Beth Dichter's curator insight, June 17, 10:50 PM

What if instead of giving homework to our students we asked them to come up with ideas? This chart provides a variety of alternative ways to look at homework. The post describes this as "Rather than simply a list of alternatives to homework, it instead contextualizes the need for work at home (or, “homework”). It does this by taking typical classroom situations–the introduction of new material, demonstrating a procedure, etc.), and offering alternatives to traditional homework assignments."

Consider asking your students what they would suggest doing instead of homework. What might you be able to add to these suggestions?

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education

Advent of Google means we must rethink our approach to education | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

Would a person with good handwriting, spelling and grammar and instant recall of multiplication tables be considered a better candidate for a job than, say, one who knows how to configure a peer-to-peer network of devices, set up an organisation-wide Google calendar and find out where the most reliable sources of venture capital are, I wonder? The former set of skills are taught in schools, the latter are not.

We have a romantic attachment to skills from the past. Longhand multiplication of numbers using paper and pencil is considered a worthy intellectual achievement. Using a mobile phone to multiply is not. But to the people who invented it, longhand multiplication was just a convenient technology. I don't think they attached any other emotions to it. We do, and it is still taught as a celebration of the human intellect. The algorithms that make Google possible are not taught to children. Instead, they are told: "Google is full of junk."

Finnish diplomat pushes child-rearing for dads | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

For Finnish diplomat Mikko Koivumaa, being an ikumen (men who take an active role in ikuji, or child rearing) comes naturally.

Hailing from a country known to have a high level of gender equality, Koivumaa says ikumen is standard practice in Finland.

“In Finland, there’s a social welfare policy that enables that. Also men work short hours — especially compared with Japan — which enables an ikumen lifestyle seven days a week,” the 36-year-old said.

Thanks to John, David and Wise Leader!  Great scoop.

From the article:

Develop Awareness– Great leaders are self aware, organizationally aware, culturally aware, contextually aware, and emotionally aware. They value listening, engaging, observing, and learning over pontificating. They value sensitivity over insensitivity and humility over hubris. Leaders who come across as if they know everything haven’t fooled anyone – except themselves.

Doris Palomino's curator insight, Today, 10:24 AM

The 5 key transitions the author proposes make you think about how great human beings we expect great leaders to be: (1) find purpose, (2) people first, (3) develop awareness, (4) shun complexity, and (5) get personal. And I could not agree more about the fact how many people assume the responsability to lead but only a few can do it well: "Average leaders spend time scaling processes, systems, and models – great leaders focus on scaling leadership".

Practical Theory - Co-Curating Our School

Practical Theory - Co-Curating Our School | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it

"Most classrooms have bulletin boards. It’s where teachers put up exemplary work – often ten or twenty versions of the same project. And many teachers hang up projects in the hallways. We do that too, but does it go far enough? What if students and teachers treated their school as a living gallery and made more deliberate attempts to curate the school?"

"BYOD alakoulun historian tunnilla"

"BYOD alakoulun historian tunnilla" | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
Ilpo Halonen's curator insight, June 17, 5:27 AM

Omien laitteiden tuominen mukaan opetukseen lienee ainoa realistinen vaihtoehto toteuttaa opetuksen transformaatio ei-digitaalisesta digitaaliseen. Yksi luokallinen iPadejä maksaa noin 15 000 euroa, 10 luokallista jo 150 000 euroa.
