Curating and sharing stories should be understood as part of a knowledge economy. If stories are tribal currency, then curators are money handlers. Via Robin Good, gdecugis
luiy's curator insight,
Many companies and organizations use influencers to help them reach out to people. Curators are an interesting breed of influencers. However their full potential can only be understood and appreciated through the lens of their tribes. Tribes are groups of people gathering around strong passions or emotions like hiking, gardening or ABBA. Curators do not work in isolation, but in relation to the people that share their passions.
Curators as dumpster divers I was in a discussion with Olga Kravets, a netnographer, and she proposed that curators serve their tribe like dumpster divers. They dive into containers to rummage through heaps of garbage to find useful stuff that can be re-purposed. When they are done they bring forth their scavenged gifts to their tribe.
Something really interesting happens in the curation process, because stories don’t have intrinsic value. An unshared story is basically like rubbish, lying around without any value. Stories gain their meaning and value by sharing, but it’s not as simple as that. The curator imparts her own value, status and trust, upon the story.
Curators represent a new type of tribal leadership that operates bottom-up and peer to peer. As a member of a tribe, curators will always be more native and relevant than any outsiders will ever be. Within a tribe they are not only appreciated for leveraging their insider skills, but for sustaining and developing their culture.

The world has changed and so did the economy. From an agricultural to an industrial world, we've now moved into the post-industrial era where knowledge is the true currency and a lot of us are knowledge workers. In this great post, Elia Morling explains how he views content curators as playing a key role as a "money handlers, changers and lenders all wrapped into one." Delete the scoop?

At the end of 2012, comScore estimated there were 52.4 million tablet owners in the U.S.; Applesold another 19.5 million iPads in the first three months of 2013 alone. So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that some companies, such as Roambi, Tableau, and Bloomberg are starting to offer mobile, touch-aware data visualization apps.
But dropping your desktop user interface onto a tablet doesn’t really take the best advantage of all of those touches and gestures now, does it?
................................................
here are plenty of open design questions to work out for touchable data visualization: How to make intuitive gestures that are easy to discover and remember, whether touch may have advantages in data storytelling interfaces, and how to blend gestures into more traditional UI designs, among others. And deep research questions are also waiting to be resolved. Petra Isenberg, a researcher at INRIA in France, published a paper on data visualization on interactive surfaces that stipulates some key questions: “[We] don’t fully understand how touching virtual data affects comprehension or memorability of information,” she writes. So whether you’re a practitioner or a researcher, there is a lot to work on here. Not only will tablet usage continue to grow, but other opportunities for museum installations, kiosks, and large-format presentation systems offer plenty of use-contexts to explore data visualization that takes advantage of the full interaction bandwidth afforded by these new displays and devices Delete the scoop?

As it turns out, social media and search go hand-in-hand...
From Facebook and Twitter, to Pinterest and MySpace (yes, it still exists), social media users are often on the search for… something. For marketers, understanding the searches that lead to improved engagement is critical. To that end, Azntaiji Multimedia and SocialRadius have produced a new infographic highlighting exactly what so many of us are searching for. Via Lauren Moss, Ilkka Olander

"One little feature that iOS really needs is the ability to natively “print to PDF” directly on the iPad and iPhone, a popular trick on the Mac and in the PC world that allows you to digitally print anything and, in this case, save the contents of any web document or web page as a self-contained PDF document, allowing it to be read later, printed, or used for whatever other purpose. Since this great feature isn’t around on the iPhone and iPad at the moment, we can use a nice bookmarklet trick combined with a free third party web service to be able to add a “Save as PDF” option to Safari in iOS, which allows you to ‘print’ or convert any web page to a PDF file that is then accessible to apps like iBooks. Let’s walk through the process of setting this up:" Via John Evans, WebTeachers

"With this new application in Google Docs ( Drive ), teachers can now record their audio comments and share them with their students. Update/Tip: I tried it out-if you have to change your original document-just copy it and add voice to it-121 Writing doesn't sync with your Google Docs updates.
Instructors are always looking for ways to add audio feedback-I'd much prefer adding voice messages to my student's Google Docs then just text like I have in the past. Delete the scoop?
