Genius app instantly solves math problems by using a phone's camera

Genius app instantly solves math problems by using a phone's camera | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
I've seen the future and it is math less and it is awesome and it is this PhotoMath app that solves math problems just by pointing your phone's camera at them. It's like a cross between a text reading camera, a supremely sophisticated calculator and well, the future. Point and solve and never do math again.

OK, tried it and it really seems to work.  Not sure if that is good or bad, but could be a game changer.

PBL- Let the Class Solve World Problems

PBL- Let the Class Solve World Problems | Leadership Think Tank | Scoop.it
Can kids solve real life problems that affect our world? Sure! Why not? Many of you know the 7 sterile steps to PBL. How about adding a little more to the 7 steps? Here are a few ideas about how to...

Check out this great visual on Project Based Learning (PBL)from Mia MacMeekin. It provides a look at the seven steps found in PBL. For each step she provides a number of ways for students to think about the specific process. What are the seven areas?

1. Start with a real life problem

2. Map it out

3. Prototype, prototype, prototype

4. Be creative

5. Think global

6. Join a challenge

7. Set goals

8. Create learning moments

Along the way she also makes some suggestions on what you should be doing as a teacher. If PBL is new to you (or your students) this would be a great visual to have your students recreate, where they may change words and add images to make it their own. Then hang it in your classroom and support them as they become experienced at project based learning.

This is an interesting article that I think would especially apply to the technical communications community. I can tell you that my entire career has been nothing but unstable. Gone are the days where you spend so many years someplace and have the devout company loyalty and the mentorship to help you get ahead in that company. I've gotten to the point that while I still crave having a "secure" job (which for me means that I can stay there indefinitely, not be laid off, and am a full-time employee with all the benefits), I've accepted that is highly unlikely to happen anytime in the near future, if ever. I think I'm stuck in consultancy limbo forever. I've learned to make the most of it as best as I can. I am grateful that the current assignment I'm on is an indefinite assignment for the moment--it will be going into my third year in January 2015, and if I complete that year it will be tied with the longest period I've ever spent at any other job. I'm also grateful that I like where I am too. Three years at any one place isn't much. With the economic turmoil of the past few years, I don't see this trend going away. As the author of this article says, job stability is a roller coaster, and you have to be prepared for the ride. I recommend reading this article.

How cultures around the world make decisions

Oliver Durrer's curator insight, October 23, 11:38 AM

Decision making is an essential and key part of entrepreneurship. To optimize and systematize the decision-making process within your company is one element. Another crucial success factor for your business is to understand how your customers make decisions. Sharp consumer and customer insight is at the basis of any successful enterprise. The cultural component, respectively the value framework (individual vs. collective, spiritual vs. material, etc.) as well as the timeframe (linear vs. circular) your consumers and customers embody, guide their decisions. You have to embrace this in order to not only gain customers but also delight them and turn them into ambassadors of your products and services.
