All of us are prone to believing our own legend—and each of us must be aware of the shadow we cast. Carl Jung described the concept of The Persona and The Shadow—our public face (show) versus the portion of ourselves we wish to hide. Just as we see when we stand close to the fire, the further we move away from the light—the longer our shadow becomes. Self-Awareness is the fire of knowledge which burns brightly in all of us. As we let our ego drive us further away from the fire, our shadow lengthens accordingly.

Leadership has been changing for some time, but not uniformly. It is not readily evident in education that hierarchy is a thing of the past. What this means is that we are educating children and youth in a model that theorists think is passe. No wonder we have a crisis. Practice and theory are not separate, they are fused.

Tom Gilbert, a 20th century performance expert, created a formula to measure the performance improvement potential for every worker in a specific work setting. By looking at the exemplar, Gilbert demonstrated what the variance was in terms of possible — or potential — performance. Some companies today use Gilbert’s formula. Instead of assuming the most accomplished performer is uniquely different from the lowest performer, his work reminds that differences often relate to opportunity and contingency.
