Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited (DTTL) have provided a set of interesting results from a survey of the world’s future leaders and what they think about innovation, which was released for the World Economic Forum, held in January 2013.
Tom Hood's insight:

Generational Issues are the #1 issues affecting the CPA Profession and Business in general, according to the research done by the AICPA and the CPA Horizons 2025 Report. This report puts it in the context of innovation but I think it is much broader and deeper (it is also by one of the Big Four Accounting firms).

 

This summary and quote capture it well,

 

The critical message – can we wait or shift leaders aside who don’t get it?

 

“A generational shift is taking place in business as baby boomers, many of whom may have been wedded to the ‘old way’ of doing business, begin to step down from their leadership roles to retire,” said Salzberg. “Real opportunity exists for organizations to step up and create the conditions and commitment needed to encourage and foster innovation in their work environments. And there’s a tremendous upside if we get this right: we can better retain talent, remain more competitive into the future, and more positively impact society.”

A vision must also be strategically sound. You have to have a reasonable shot at getting there."


Intereting that this article shows up the weekend after we (our Business Learning Institute team) helped falitate a visioing process for the State of Maryland with the Chamber of Commmerce's Maryland Competitiveness Coalition this past Friday. Even states and nations need inspiring visions.

Apply MBSN (Management by Sticky Notes) to increase the impact. At BLI we call this ROP - Return on People.

"Never let yourself be pursuaded that any one Great Man, any one leader, is necessary to the salvation of America. When America consists of one leader and 158 million followers, it will no longer be America."  Credited to Dwight D. Eisenhower in a September 3, 1976 edition of the National Courier, we could well adjust the quote to the context of this article thus:

 

Never let yourself be pursuaded that any one Great Man or Woman, any one leader, is necessary to the salvation of business in America. When Corporations consist of one leader and the rest followers, they will no longer be effective.

 

Borrowing from Marshall and Manuel in "The Light and the Glory", it is the most dangerous kind of corporate self-delusion to think that a CEO, regardless of how capable he or she is, can single-handedly reverse the bent of the organization's defensive culture and increase effectiveness. And when it becomes apparent that the CEO cannot, he or she will become the next in a long line of scapegoats. 

 

In stark contrast to this "one great leader" concept stands the Leadership-Culture-Performance connection.  REAL LEADERS understand and exploit this connection through the impact they have on those who choose to follow their lead.  By modeling visionary behaviors that are congruent with visionary messages and employing prescriptive rather than restrictive leadership strategies, their impact is one that produces greatness in, with and through others.  The result is an entire corporation of leaders who, through constructive relationships, exchange information vital to their individual and collective success.  Only then can their approach to one another in the process of working together create the culture whereby their vision can emerge, their effectiveness can increase and their performance improve.  

 

Indeed!  Companies intent on surviving and thriving will need to move into the Post-CEO World.

I Agree - work-life balance is a myth. One or the other is always "out of balance" and it managing that wherin lies the secret. I really like Big Idea #1 whcih is really doing work that matters, having a say in your work, and aligning to an organization iwth purpose.


Or per Meg, "It is the ability for you to have a say in what you do and in having the ability to tune the mix to feed your own soul. While this can feel out of your ability to resolve, I encourage you to focus your energy here."

Great article and I met Marina at the DigitalNow Conference in 2014 in Nashville.


The march of digital disruption continues even to the "higher skilled professions" like accountants. "While some of the platforms do not require high skill levels or provide high pay, increasingly this new mode of working is expanding to higher skilled occupations, e.g. accountants, doctors, financial planners, and others. It is precisely the flexibility and accessibility of the new work styles that make them so attractive to so many people."


and her closing point puts the exclamation mark on it, "Today we have a choice: we can be thrown into the new world of work as castaways, naked, dazed, and ill-equipped to cope with the new hostile landscape. Or we can arrive as enlightened immigrants, open to the new opportunities and ready to learn the new culture."

Owners of small businesses are increasingly signing up for subscriptions to cloud-based software.

This puts an exclamation point on why CPAs need to pay attention to the cloud and mobile technologies and reinforces Sage's research that 61% of SMBs want to move to the cloud and only 10% of CPAs are ready to help them. #notfutureready.


"Almost 37% of small businesses are “fully adapted” to cloud-based applications, said Steve King, a partner at Emergent Research, which tracks technology use by small firms. He expects that to increase to 78% of small businesses by 2020.


What’s changed, in large part, is the way many owners want to operate their nascent businesses more efficiently and often from multiple locations...But, rather than sitting in a backroom office, many owners today, such as Christina Ruiz, prefer to access business data from mobile devices, wherever they go—from sales trips and client meetings to a day at the beach."

Several organizing principles can help companies sustain both profitability and a sense of purpose.

A well researched article on the power of purpose and link to profitability. In today's topsy-turvy world, people want to work for an organization with an inspiring purpose - yes it gets to that "vision thing" and MIT/Sloan digs into that concept in this article.


"Purpose, according to Ratan Tata, the recently retired CEO of the Tata Group, is “a spiritual and moral call to action; it is what a person or company stands for.”1 When such a purpose exists, it provides employees with a clear sense of direction, helps them prioritize and inspires them to go the extra mile — which, the argument goes, should ultimately be good for profit."



In a famous article in Time magazine, Robert Ajemian reported George H.W. Bush’s exasperated reaction to friendly suggestions that he invest time in carefully thinking about his prospective presidency: “Oh, the vision thing.”


The purpose of this article is to help you to understand why and how a corporate purpose matters and to show how it can be realized without sacrificing profitability — and indeed may result in higher profitability.


They introduce the research from goal-framing theory and a concept of pro-social goals. "Goal-framing theory shows that a company’s goals make a difference only when they work on the beliefs of employees, and that the most valuable goals are those that support collaborative work." Once again we see the power of collaboration in the co-creation of these goals that serve to set the "pro-social" firm-wide goals that sit above everything else like a guiding light.


The article goes on to emphasize that these goals must be kept in the forefront, lest they be driven out by individual and departmental goals.

 

"However, these goals compete with other goals for individual mind share and are easily driven out by gain and hedonic goals. As a result, corporate executives have to work doubly hard to affirm pro-social goals and to develop systems and structures that reinforce them. And, most fundamentally, establishing pro-social goals requires developing a tolerance for obliquity — that is, the paradoxical notion that if we follow pro-social goals we aren’t actually getting rid of gain goals. Instead, we are realizing them more effectively."

I have been noticing a change in CPAs in all walks of life (small practice, large firms, mid-market CFOs, public company finance/accounting teams) talking about the need for leadership at all levels. It goes way beyond the obvious need for succession planning. It seems to be driven by the accelerating change and complexity and need for people who can anticipate what's coming around the bend and help mobilize the organization to make the turns and adjust the sails as necessary. It is this kind of leader that I am seeing becoming fast in-demand. What do you see?

Generational Issues are the #1 issues affecting the CPA Profession and Business in general, according to the research done by the AICPA and the CPA Horizons 2025 Report. This report puts it in the context of innovation but I think it is much broader and deeper (it is also by one of the Big Four Accounting firms).
