Customers expect your organization to be socially friendly. Social community management and interacting with the public in the social space is a very important role. Corporate leadership in social media should not be absent here.
Let us not over complicate what is leadership. Here is my take on the definition.
London2012 is being hailed as one of the best for female athletes given it was the first time every Nation had a female athlete to represent them. An important milestone indeed. So for that reason, I have decided to write a handful of posts on those female athletes that inspired me and I am calling these posts “My London2012 Inspired Take-Aways. As there seems to be a lot of discussion in the media on the topic of a woman’s hair lately, I have decided to kick-off with Joanna Rowsell that to me demonstrates the Take-Away of Being Yourself.
Women are leaving the workforce in droves in favor of being at home. Not to be a homemaker, but as job-making entrepreneurs. Women have been starting businesses at a higher rate than men for the last 20 years and tend to create home-based micro (less than 5 employees) and small businesses. Women will create over half of the 9.72 million new small business jobs expected to be created by 2018 and more and more are doing this from home offices across the country. It’s a surprising statistic, especially considering that women-owned businesses only created 16 percent of total U.S. jobs that existed in 2010. Read article for more....
Some cultures expect that meetings should be formal, They see the meeting as a key management tool for debate and a place for decision-making. Other cultures expect that meetings should be mostly informal and unstructured with a focus on relationship building. As a result, clarifying meeting expectations, approach and norms before a meeting especially if you are conducting a meeting with representatives from different countries, is so important. ...
There are no shortage of headlines in the media about some employee’s social media account and what the employer did or did not do. Is this really representative of what social media means in the workplace? Not at all! One tool or platform does not make an organization social. It is not just about the tools- especially in isolation of the bigger picture. Well at least it ought not be. Sensational headlines just feed the fear of those with a social media phobia. What organizations and businesses should be thinking about is how can they leverage this new way of doing business. Social media and the new technologies of today have totally changed how we work, communicate, interact, collaborate and relate to each other. Business leaders need to rethink how to take their organization to the next level and consequently “enable” their staff to succeed in this new environment- our new reality.
Leading to meet one’s destiny. Empowering a Can Do attitude with those who cross your path. Accountability of what you do, say and impart. Directing a shared vision and future. Empathy is nev...
This post is about those all important introductions as a business leader. The reality is, we assess a person within the first few minutes of meeting someone. This can determine whether to hire, partner or date for that matter! We pack a lot of meaning in those oh so precious seconds of meeting a person....
When I headed Engineering, I remember one of my engineers sharing with me: “My initiative would be just fine, if I did not have people in it!” I must admit – I chuckled. The reality is most projects and initiatives fail because of the soft-side of the project. Here are my 30 Reasons Why Strategic Initiatives Fail..
Leaders' primary objective is to empower others to make decisions and take actions that are aligned with the organization’s vision, purpose, and strategy. These nuances are the softer side of leadership, beyond the technical skills that you have already mastered. Leadership is the "eighth wonder of the world." It is better seen and felt than defined and said. It’s easy to intellectualize, but elusive to actualize. The world’s most impactful leaders in all arenas, from business to government, understand the paradox that although leadership starts with the leader, it’s never about the leader. This wisdom should be emulated and applied by everyone who aspires to leadership. Read more: http://bit.ly/yljo4z

I have gone to enough conferences over the past 6 months to pull the alarm. Consider it pulled. Why? I have gone to a number of social media conferences dedicated to functions or departments and I have found that each function had a different perspective on the fit of social media in their organization ...

The holy grail of business is to have 100% of your employees, 100% engaged in assisting you every day, to accomplish your business goals and objectives. The unfortunate reality is that, in most businesses at any time, at least 40% of employees will fall well below the desired level of engagement. This excellent article identifies 10 barriers, all of which employers can control, that if placed in front of your employees, will lead to less than optimum levels of employee engagement becoming the norm.

Learnings from implementing business change using my favorite cartoonists and speakers to make the point. 20 Tips are shared.
It seems that no matter where I went over the past few months, the art of storytelling has been top of mind. Storytelling is instrumental when delivering a message, sharing aspirations or when trying to mobilize people.
So how do you get your story told in an environment that has become one that requires immediate gratification? If you have not captured the attention of your audience in seconds, you have very little chance of telling your story. Right? Some time ago, I wrote a post on the 18 checkpoints to consider for storytelling.
I still believe they all hold true. What I have learned since writing that post, is that there is also a need to tell your OWN story.

Business owners and leaders thinking about making a splash in the social arena – don’t. Winning in the social arena is not about hype or making a splash. It is about a two-way communication, collaboration and a serious commitment. If you do decide to make this commitment, as a leader you also have to think of this as building a new capability
I thought I would touch on the topic of exposure and global leadership. Hence my question and title of this post: How much skin is enough? I think it is fair to say that in the western world, the level of acceptable exposure for women has drastically changed over the years....

I have been in so many “global organizations” where they use the term global and what it really means is wherever the head office resides ( be it UK, US, Canada, Japan- wherever), the way the business will be conducted in other countries, will be the same as the head office country. So their interpretation of global is that we are doing business IN that country -not WITH that county. Wrong!...
