John Michel's curator insight, June 26, 2013 12:42 PM

"Creativity always comes as a surprise to us; therefore we can never count on it and we dare not believe in it until it has happened. In other words, we would not consciously engage upon tasks whose success clearly requires that creativity be forthcoming. Hence, the only way in which we can bring our creative resources fully into play is by misjudging the nature of the task, by presenting it to ourselves as more routine, simple, undemanding of genuine creativity than it will turn out to be."

Douglas E Castle's curator insight, June 26, 2013 3:05 PM

My failures have taught me far more than my successes.

Rethinking the Work of Leadership

Rethinking the Work of Leadership | Leadership & Organizational Development | Scoop.it

Here we are in 2013 with organizational leadership models that continue to deny the social nature of organizations and wallow in inertia.

Our leadership practices remain authoritative. People are disengaged, distrusting and perhaps even disenfranchised.

If it were only so in the land of Dilbert.  Unfortunately this is pervasive in many organizations - lack of trust, lack of sharing knowledge and no collaboration all go hand in hand and are together the tools of a failure to innovate.

Wonderul Scoop Kenneth!  I am currently working on understanding inclusion by exploring exclusion and this is absolutely perfect!

While we may have a "diverse" employee base"  if we have authoritative and distrusting cultures, it is impossible to have inclusion!

Are You a Thought Leader?

Are You a Thought Leader? | Leadership & Organizational Development | Scoop.it
"Being a thought leader takes focus, and in today’s world, that is often a challenge. Business owners are looking for the next big thing, rather than owning their one thing. However, when you do, you have the potential to lead and help shift the thinking of others. Many of us would strive for this, but, how do you know if you are actually leading others in the way they think and behave?"

How and Why to Be a Leader (Not a Wannabe)

How and Why to Be a Leader (Not a Wannabe) | Leadership & Organizational Development | Scoop.it

We need a new generation of leaders. And we need it now. We're in the midst of a Great Dereliction — a historic failure of leadership, precisely when we need it most. Hence it's difficult, looking around, to even remember what leadership is.

Kenneth Mikkelsen's curator insight, July 8, 2013 12:13 PM

Excerpt from Umair's blog post:

We're surrounded by people who are expert at winning — elections, deals, titles, bonuses, bailouts, profit. And often, we're told: they're the ones we should look up to — because it's the spoils and loot that really matter.

But you know and I know: mere winners are not true leaders — not just because gaming broken systems is nothing but an empty charade of living; but because life is not a game. It isn't about what you have, and how much — but what you do, and why — if you're to live a life that matters.

Don Cloud's curator insight, August 29, 2013 8:32 PM

Here's a question (asked several different ways) every leader should be able to answer (and if you can't then perhaps this is something you need to think long and hard about).

What is your "why"?  That is, "why" do you want to lead?  What is your personal leadership purpose?  What is your individual purpose in leading?

If you can't answer the question of your own "why", then you may find it extremely difficult to create the "why" of your organization or understand the individual "why" of each of your people.

(Hint: As a leader, try to answer the question without referencing yourself)
