The Lean System of Motivation - Management Meditations

The Lean System of Motivation - Management Meditations | Leadership & Management | Scoop.it
JLAndrianarisoa's insight:

The Toyota Production System or lean management has been described in many ways. It is the systematic  elimination of waste. It is continuous improvement. It is striving for interruption free processes. It is a passionate focus on serving customers. It is many things. But one aspect of lean that has not been given enough attention, in my opinion, is how lean is an organization wide system of motivation that creates a high performance culture. Too many lean implementations suffer from a focus on problem solving skills, but a failure to attend to the system or culture of motivation. Too many rely on the “they really oughtta wanna” assumption which usually results in disappointment.

(From the article): Creating workplace collaboration isn’t as simple as just telling employees to work together. Instead, managers must give their teams specific tools, then oversee how they are being used.

“We often tell people to work together, but we don’t tell them how,” said E Allan Lind, professor of leadership at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, North Carolina. “First, we have to be mindful that people working together is not a normal state of things.”

Managers must show how good ideas come out of working together. They must also demonstrate that real collaboration equals innovation, and be on the watch for communication breakdowns.

And  let's do not forget those who are "sent" into the coaching process, do not want anything from it, and - somehow, perhaps due to the coach's careful approach and patience and excellent capacity to be able to hear the "inner music" - who are finding something to work on  and also the joy & fun to do so... that's an even more important challenge...

As a Manager, Here Is How to Keep Employees Engaged

Emeric Nectoux's curator insight, July 30, 2015 6:24 AM

The engagement “keys” -- Meaning, Autonomy, Growth, Impact and Connect (M-A-G-I-C) —are primarily the responsibility of the individual employee.  In other words, employees choose to engage because they find meaning (…autonomy, growth, impact, connection) in their work.

Give meaning to employee is definitely to me, the initial key for his/her engagement. Without meaning, how can anyone feel that he will be able to bring his part to make things progress?

Become more influential by asking strategic questions

Become more influential by asking strategic questions | Leadership & Management | Scoop.it

hen working with HR business partners we are often asked how they can become more strategic in the business.

Our rather simple answer is to ask more questions.

But not any old questions – strategic questions. We define these questions as ‘those which move the client to new insights or a new perspective.’ They direct their mind to a different place, a new way of looking at an issue, a place where they see possibilities or generate new ideas.

Miklos Szilagyi's curator insight, March 7, 2015 7:00 AM

"...Imagine you are playing tennis.  You are having a really good game and when you take a break your opponent casually says ‘you are having a great game, how are you doing it?’ Immediately your mind starts to dissect your game.

Once you begin to do this, chances are you also start to drop the odd serve and miss a shot you should have got. The act of directing you to what you are doing can destroy your concentration or at least have you focused on the wrong thing – how you are being successful rather than the ball. This ability to focus the mind is the power of questions...."

I'm just thinking... whether this tennis example is the best one to illustrate how to use powerful questions with a useful effect but the story was good to share...:-))) (for the next time when your tennis or golf opponents are a little bit too good...:-)))
