Why It's Time To Put Students In The Driver's Seat

Why It's Time To Put Students In The Driver's Seat | Leadership, Innovation, and Creativity | Scoop.it
Think about how you or the people you work with approach the creation of a blended learning lesson plan. The first steps of coming up with and flushing out your initial idea. Then, scouring the web to find safe, factually accurate sites that are not blocked by your school filters and checking the fine print …

This method of teaching does require a certain amount of bravery. There is a very real chance that when a student asks you a question (How do I add media? How do I change the font? How do I import pictures? etc. etc.) you will have to say the dreaded “I don’t know”. But the neat thing is, your students are ok with this. You’re all learning as you go. More often than not another child in the class will be using the same site or will have at least used it before. If a classmate knows the answer, they can step into the role of teacher – from which much confidence is gained and leadership skills are learned.

Even the most reserved kid really enjoys teaching their teacher a trick or two. If no one knows the answer, they can collaborate to find the solution; an activity that provides important life skills with many real-world applications. All while leaving the initiative, process development and ownership of the learning itself right where it belongs, in the hands of the learners.

Gust MEES: I started with it in 2002 already and was a pioneer in my country, BUT I got BEST results! Make sure to work TOGETHER as a TEAM with the students, learners, create ALSO some groups where the BEST work together with the weakest. YOU will love it later and YOU will miss it as it gives YOU a direct feedback of WHAT THEY learned and YOU adjust on demand and necessity... WHEN the BEST feel boring, give THEM a special task to motivate THEM ;) ===> Adjust <===.

Concerning the questions from the students, please check my advice here:

The Increasingly Dated Image Of The Slacker Teacher

The Increasingly Dated Image Of The Slacker Teacher | Leadership, Innovation, and Creativity | Scoop.it

Those of us of a certain age probably well remember those teachers who showed movies all the time, sat behind their desks, and chatted with their friends while giving students seatwork to complete independently.  However, back in the mid-20th century, many occupations operated in a similar manner. Executives and CEOs relaxed with their coffee and read the newspaper. Others overextended breaks, came in a few minutes late to work, or left early. Nowadays, those slacker executives and CEOs have been replaced. Young professionals, fresh out of college, fill their shoes. Companies expect employees to attain certain goals and demand increased performance from all their workers. A new work ethic replaces the old one. Employees must prove they make a difference for the company.

Via Patti Kinney, Dean J. Fusto
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

Are we sure that slacker teachers were forced to leave the profession? Or are many who left were the ones who worked hard and found no benefit and only obstacles?

I am sure there are slackers in classrooms, but to say those who left are slackers is a gross generalization.

Anne-Laure Delpech's curator insight, September 28, 3:12 AM

donhornsby's curator insight, September 28, 11:30 AM

(From the article): I like these factors because they emphasize behaviors, not traits. We can all incorporate idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration into our commands if we take deliberate steps to do so.  We can all be like my former Sergeant Major or my first Commander if we ask ourselves the following:

What can I do to provide a vision, a sense of mission, and instill pride in my organization?

What can I do to inspire and motivate my organization?

What can I do to foster a command climate that stimulates intellectual growth in my organization?

What can I do to help my subordinates develop to their full potential?

We do not have to walk away from our commands feeling like we just pulled our hands out of a bucket of water. We can make a difference and leave a legacy that will endure long after we are removed from the equation.  Approaching leadership with the goal of being transformational, not only makes the experience more rewarding, it also ensures that the woodpile is a little bit higher on the back end.

Cammie Dunaway's curator insight, September 29, 4:51 PM

A “water bucket” leader is someone whose leadership approach can be likened to sticking a hand into a bucket of water and creating a stir by splashing it around. Eventually, the leader pulls their hand out, and when they do, the water quickly returns to it’s original state. It’s as if they never existed. Even though there was a lot of activity, in the end, the bucket of water looks no different than it did before

Joe does an excellent job summarizing the video into five key points. The two points which make sense the most to me are 2 and 3. Cutting education is like a farmer who damages his or her top soil. Good farmers would not do that. The soil is part of the life of the farm and the farmer. Teachers don't need surveillance; they need support. We live in an era where Schools are managed rather than leadership emerging. The result is that School managers can only surveil. They don't seem to get past surveillance to communicating and supporting. Many of those managers raced through the classroom, have not been in the classroom for years, and do not know what it means to teach anymore.

The matter has being brought it to the notice of the World Churches Council and the Commission of the Churches asked its notice on the matter to the United Nations for your appropriate decisions. ?The World Churches Council Policy Paper on Social Justice and Common Goods is the best policy to the World peace and unity solutions, which has been published on 22 March 2011 and the same is in accordance with Psalm 85. The Church cannot succeed if it, isolates itself, Not only must Christians reach out to Muslims and other faiths in the spirit of ecumenism, but there is a need to embrace other people of different philosophical convictions. This requires ideological tolerance, maturity and self assurance in what one believes in. Such coalition building is made easier by choosing issues that unite organizations and movements and which have less potential causing divisions. At the same time we need an honest and inventive method of dealing with differences. The global movement for economic justice relies considerably on policy analysis and research conducted by hundreds if not thousands of academics researchers and scholars. ?Our consequences of the changing power relations in today's world is that there is more room in the public sphere for the affirmation of collective values and principles, experience proves that an informed public opinion can be powerful today, and can change governments public and international agendas. Again Churches are challenged to make use of this opportunity. They need to read the signs of time and to make their voices heard by responding to peoples cries for justice and dignity, and by speaking truth to the powers- whoever and wherever their may be. ?Christians do not have ready made answers and solutions to propose. The Bible offers guidelines (love, sharing, justice for the poor) but does not defined one "Christian" economy or "Christian" politics. ?Churches and Church related organizations can initiate public debates and largely use media means to reach a broader constituency, furthermore, regional thematic discussions can be facilitated with the ecumenical family. WCC should develop specific analysis depending on the context. ?What are theological implications for commodification common goods? ?How shall we ensure the participation all people in managing common goods in the world? ?How do we deal with power imbalances in the world? ?How can the ecumenical family engage itself effectively and in a coherent and convincing way in addressing global power imbalance? ?How can WCC lead a climate change campaign with social justice as a focus? ?What kind of collective values can be draw for the Churches to guide them in addressing the problem of commodification of common goods? ?The above questions have been answered in our research materials available at http://www.goldenduas.com and alsohttp://www.facebook.com/research of international development solutions and the same are to be discussed by the Churches, public and all its organizations in the interest of public safety, peace, unity, health, wealth, faith, interfaith ?                 Under this circumstances, it is just and necessary that UK, USA, Cambridge, Churches on the International Affairs are requested to accept our research paper and also our research organization as an organization under other faith category to assist the commission to achieve its goal of International Peace and climate changes solutions for the benefit of world community especially Christians, Jewish and Muslims, under the by-law 3.11 of CCIA. In view of the aforementioned submissions in the interest of maintenance of International Peace and Security, UN may be pleased to authorize our organization in the name and style of` Research on International Development Solutions `and also our research report in confirmatory with U/A 96 of the present Charter read with U/A 23 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and thus render Justice.  Now, Palestine Muslims are fighting with Israel , both countries are affected and innocent people are killed frequently which is against the Quranic verses 7:137 & 5:33 that no one can claim Israel Government areas which is a place of Israel People but not Muslim or Christian and they can only Allow worship in the Holy Places of Israel . These facts has not been Discussed for amicable solutions of social justice and common good by United Nations to respect Gods word . It is pertinent to note that why the jewish people are affecting the Muslims is mention the Quran 7:167 ? And the same should be taken into consideration by jewish people in the world in the interest of social justice and common good on the light of the research paper posted  at our website www.goldenduas.com and render justice.  Your successU. Is Integrity the Secret to Great Leadership?

Is Integrity the Secret to Great Leadership? | Leadership, Innovation, and Creativity | Scoop.it

The actions of a business are its value statement. Actions speak volumes about what really matters most – not what should matter, not what we wish mattered, but what really does matter to us. They swamp mission statements, speeches or memos, and they eclipse intentions.

Having the kind of integrity that leaves no room between what we say and what we do is really hard work. It’s much easier to follow the words of JR Ewing of the TV series Dallas, who said: “Once you lose your integrity, everything’s easy.” Lots of people have chosen this path. Others find it to be too much work to align their decisions and actions with what they claim as priorities.

Via Kenneth Mikkelsen, Roy Sheneman, PhD, Amy Melendez
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

Integrity is important. It has multiple meanings beginning with honesty and authenticity. It also has to do with being part of the greater whole. Too often, I found School managers were just that managers and operated as observers. It allowed them to hang on to the idea of cause and effect without thinking of the bigger picture as complex with considerable uncertainty.

HJJP's curator insight, September 21, 1:40 AM

Considering that for most of us, trust and confidence in our leaders are identified as the most important attributes we want them to have, stands to reason that integrity, the element which inspires said trust and confidence in someone, would be the central ingredient of great leadership.

Or is it?

Can we stand here and say for sure that all great leaders are or were people of great integrity? Or is it the appearance of integrity that matters? Or maybe it does not matter at all, and it is your ability to set up smoke and mirrors that make you someone people would follow? or is it your ability to inspire fear?

So, the most important aspect is how do we define GREAT LEADERHSIP? Is it based on results? Is it based on getting people to follow them blindly?

Was Genghis Khan a great leader? Julius Cesar? Francisco Franco? Hitler? JFK? GW Bush? Clinton?

Would be interested in hearing what people have to say about this subject.

Amy Melendez's curator insight, September 26, 12:41 PM

From the article: If you force yourself to look at where you actually spend your time and what you do with your resources, you may notice an internal conflict arising. It will not revolve around what I think of as “level 1 integrity” – things like never lying, cheating or stealing. Instead, it will likely challenge your “level 2 integrity” – the kind that has to do with not being divided or misaligned.

Ian Berry's curator insight, September 26, 6:15 PM

"Theories on how people learn are not new. Piaget, Bruner, Vygotsky, Skinner and others have theorized for years how it is we come to “know” things.

Unlike many theories involving physics for example, it is unlikely that a single learning theory is “right,” and will ultimately prove other theories “wrong.” How people learn is complex, and any unifying theory on how it all happens that’s entirely accurate would likely be too vague to be helpful. In that way, each “theory” is more of a way to describe one truth out of many."

The who question often goes unasked. Who is the person? What is the context?

As well, planned curricula is still filtered in the classroom conversations. It is always forming in those conversations.

The Power of "I Don't Know"

The Power of "I Don't Know" | Leadership, Innovation, and Creativity | Scoop.it
Educators are tasked with teaching students how to find answers themselves. And it all starts with a simple three-word phrase: I don't know.

Via John Purificati, Dean J. Fusto
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

Being able to say I don't know opens up a space where teachers and students can enter. It is a conversational space where exploring takes place and learning happens. It does not guarantee what learning will happen, but learning will happen in that vulnerable space.

Teaching Students, Not Subjects: Why We Need a Deeper Learning Approach

Teaching Students, Not Subjects: Why We Need a Deeper Learning Approach | Leadership, Innovation, and Creativity | Scoop.it

One thing I learned right away when honored with the National Teacher of the Year Award is that people wanted to know my philosophy of teaching. The answer has always been easy: Kids before content. In my classroom, I don't teach English. I teach students.  Everything we know about what it takes to succeed in today's economy and society suggests that our nation needs more individuals with nimble minds capable of creative, innovative thinking, and who have the perseverance to take on -- and learn from -- challenges. These are the demands of the 21st century. We should prepare students by helping them develop these skills across all subjects.

Via Patti Kinney, Amy Melendez
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

Thinking about students and people first speaks to the relational nature of teaching. We are always teaching someone and that makes the content part of a larger, complex conversation.

Students are subjects who are subjected to living in a complex world which acts on them. Teaching is about exploring the spaces provided.

The challenge for School reformers and managers is they want certainty where none exists.

This article sums up why teaching never becomes a boring profession; teachers always have to change and make adjustments to how we teach content in order to help students learn. In the process, we as teachers are always learning to be creative and learning from our students.

Why moral education should involve moral philosophy

Why moral education should involve moral philosophy | Leadership, Innovation, and Creativity | Scoop.it
Ethics are increasingly a part of the school curriculum, and practical introductory classes in applied ethics are part of the training that nurses, scientists and soldiers undergo.

Via Suvi Salo
Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

If we looked at Adam Smith's work as moral philosophy rather than an economic treatise, what a difference it might make. The capitalism he envisioned, which has morphed into contemporary neo-liberal non-regulatory living, suggested we were responsible for others. He may have left something to be desired in terms of environmental questions, but those are spaces we can have conversations about rather than ignore.

One consideration about ethics is that it can easily devolve into theoretical discussions meaning nothing. Kwame Appiah suggested we have many who talk and the result of their talk is turning wine into water. Gert Biesta suggested classrooms are great spaces to live, teach, and learn ethically in a community.

We are almost 15 years into the 21st Century and the mantra remains  cliches like "jump into the 21st Century." Perhaps, that is part of the problem. Rather than paying attention to the concrete moments we are living in we are always focused on things we cannot control such as the future.

Ivon Prefontaine's insight:

Another group of links to articles. The one about Sitting Bull, Economics, and Education is worth multiple reads.

The neo-liberal agenda currently driving School reform as an economic engine misses the point of preparing children for the futue that can only begin today. Economy comes from the Greek oikos meaning household. Reading Wendell Berry and Arne Naess helps me get my head around that. As well ecos, meaning place, fits into the ecological thinking. Do we ask deep questions or are we assuming given answers? Sitting Bull was asking a question which could not be easily answered, would have ongoing dialogue in the questioning, and always be open to never assuming presupposed answers.
