Matt Caruso's insight:

The traits laid out in this article are very familiar....I know many, many Airmen and AFSOC/SOF teammates that fit this precisely.  Look no further than our military to see some of the strongest people you will ever meet.  I would also offer that if you looked at great and successful organizations and corporations in the private sector, you will find this to be true of their standout employees and leaders as well.  Resilient people have a way of atrracting followers.  Building and demonstrating resiliency is truly a sign of a strong leader.

(From the article): I like these factors because they emphasize behaviors, not traits. We can all incorporate idealized influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation, and individualized consideration into our commands if we take deliberate steps to do so.  We can all be like my former Sergeant Major or my first Commander if we ask ourselves the following:

What can I do to provide a vision, a sense of mission, and instill pride in my organization?

What can I do to inspire and motivate my organization?

What can I do to foster a command climate that stimulates intellectual growth in my organization?

What can I do to help my subordinates develop to their full potential?

We do not have to walk away from our commands feeling like we just pulled our hands out of a bucket of water. We can make a difference and leave a legacy that will endure long after we are removed from the equation.  Approaching leadership with the goal of being transformational, not only makes the experience more rewarding, it also ensures that the woodpile is a little bit higher on the back end.

Cammie Dunaway's curator insight, September 29, 2014 4:51 PM

A “water bucket” leader is someone whose leadership approach can be likened to sticking a hand into a bucket of water and creating a stir by splashing it around. Eventually, the leader pulls their hand out, and when they do, the water quickly returns to it’s original state. It’s as if they never existed. Even though there was a lot of activity, in the end, the bucket of water looks no different than it did before

How to Fully Engage Physically

How to Fully Engage Physically | Leadership In Life Still Matters | Scoop.it
Without enough physical energy, every dimension of our human energy suffers. And, when this happens, it’s simply not possible to fully engage as a leader.
Matt Caruso's insight:
This is an excellent article many of our SNCO's should read and heed. Many times we loose sight of how well we are taking care of ourselves. It's all about being PME strong....physical, mentally, emotionally strong. A good PT program with good sleep helps a ton. Leaders must take care of themselves if they are to take care of others and be good examples to their teammates.

10 Things Extraordinary Bosses Give Employees

10 Things Extraordinary Bosses Give Employees | Leadership In Life Still Matters | Scoop.it
“Good bosses care about getting important things done. Exceptional bosses care about their people.”
Matt Caruso's insight:
We all have had great bosses and some not so great. So many of us are guilty of focusing on productivity vice simply setting goals and providing vision and taking care of the team. This happens a lot with strategic leaders and leaders transitioning from the tactical to the operational levels of leadership. I clearly remember when I made this shift in my own development and growth as a leader. After a few weeks of using this approach, I know my team was much for productive and happier. I still have a lot of work and growing to do and always strive to be a better leader.

8 Differences Between Traditional and Collaborative Leaders

8 Differences Between Traditional and Collaborative Leaders | Leadership In Life Still Matters | Scoop.it
“The traditional leadership style of top down management is slowly evolving into a collaborative approach that empowers employees and blurs the lines between boss and worker.”
Via Anne Leong, John Michel
Matt Caruso's insight:
Here is a simple but effective way to collaborate with the team....get a white board, gather your folks up, ID the issue and then write down all the ideas and solutions they come up with. This is fun and gets to the brains natural ability to create things and solve problem sets. I call it white boarding or spitballing concepts and ideas that help the entire team own the solution and get the problem fixed. Collaborate your hearts out.

To motivate your team to achieve the highest levels of performance (and create an extraordinary organization in the process) here are the qualities you should model every day.
Matt Caruso's insight:

Over the years as I have grown and learned lessons in leadership, I have changed which of these I admire most.  What I valued most 10 years ago is different than how I would rank these now.  Seems like these days given my current job and today's organizational climate, I really value awareness and inspiration.   All of these traits are excellent for young leaders to work on and practice using and demonstrating.  And of course, we should always be honest and hold ourselves and each other accountable.  Those are timeless traits.

The Latin root for sergeant means "one who serves or serves others". We all need to ask ourselves from time to time if we are practicing and developing into servant leaders.  Once you approach life from this perspective, you won't look at work or the world the same.  It's addicting and most rewarding when you help others for the right reasons and the right way.
