Change This - It’s Your Turn: Make Something That Matters

Change This - It’s Your Turn: Make Something That Matters | Leadership in health | Scoop.it
“'Your turn' ... is the model of the person who makes change. We seek the change that is interesting, the change for the better, and most of all, the change that connects us to someone else. This is the freedom to make change, and the willingness to seek out the tension it brings.”
Mike Baldwin's insight:

Looking forward to this book arriving.

Margaret J. Wheatley: Using Emergence to Take Social Innovations to Scale

Mike Baldwin's insight:

Good article connecting emergence with leadership and connection through effective relationships.  There is an interestesting 4 stage model that discusses networks leading to effective system wide change

This is not leadership by chance but rather leadership by design and see as a necessary capability in health care.

Overcome the Complexity Within You

Overcome the Complexity Within You | Leadership in health | Scoop.it
Some people are more prone to complicating (and impeding) getting things done.
Mike Baldwin's insight:

Interesting article on whether people make things complex. Getting the balance right on delivering a simple message with enough robustness is challenging for many people in organisations especially when their own area is involved in dealing with complexity

Are success and social value an either/or trade-off in medicine?

Are success and social value an either/or trade-off in medicine? | Leadership in health | Scoop.it

Traditionally, at a non-profit academic health organization, social value is emphasized over – sometimes even at the expense of – success, and most people would think this may not always be a bad thing.

In a world of unsustainably rising health care costs, growing needs for high quality care, and an aging population, Dr. Weinstein believes health institutions have to learn to focus on success alongside social value or they will fail at both. They have to deliver innovation, create value, manage population health, integrate health systems and produce research and education that drive better outcomes and treatment.

The only hard part is: how?

[Catalina Goria:] Are success and social value an either/or trade-off in medicine?

[Dr. James Weinstein:] No, I don’t see it as either-or, where socially-driven organizations succeed is where for-profit organizations fail and vice versa.

We need to blend the ethos of innovation for the sake of deriving shareholder or organizational value with the goal of providing the best for the patient, who is after all a customer. Done right in medicine, we think success should increase social value, not come at its cost.

Leaders lead. Is that too simple? Writers write. If you want to be a writer, write. And be sure to have people read what you write. And leaders? Leaders lead. If you want to be a leader, go lead.
