Bureaucracy Must Die

Bureaucracy Must Die | Leadership Fundamentals | Scoop.it

Most of us grew up in and around organizations that fit a common template. Strategy gets set at the top. Power trickles down. Big leaders appoint little leaders. Individuals compete for promotion. Compensation correlates with rank. Tasks are assigned. Managers assess performance. Rules tightly circumscribe discretion. This is the recipe for “bureaucracy,” the 150-year old mashup of military command structures and industrial engineering that constitutes the operating system for virtually every large-scale organization on the planet.

Via Kenneth Mikkelsen, Josée Lafontaine
John Thurlbeck, FCMI FRSA's insight:

Definitely ... most definitely! In my own experience, bureaucracy stifles innovation, experimentation and pioneering ... and encourages the most dreaded of excesses ... mediocrity!

Why Our Complex World Needs Connective Leadership

Why Our Complex World Needs Connective Leadership | Leadership Fundamentals | Scoop.it

“Diversity trumps ability” as a sufficiently diverse, large group of non-experts often outperforms a small group of experts,” found Future Perfect authorSteven Johnson. In our increasingly complex, disruptive world, we will face more situations where we’ll benefit from calling on the so-called wisdom of the crowd.

Via John Lasschuit ®™
John Thurlbeck, FCMI FRSA's insight:

Loved this article scooped by John Lasschuit! What intrigued me was the diagram plotting the relationships. As a Mind Map devotee, it was always going to lure me in! What was even more interesting was the notion of connective leadership. Great leaders are communicators; they work with and through people and they build relationships that, in turn, develop further relationships. If they don't, they are not great leaders!

This is Connected Educators month. We talk more and more about collaboration and working well together. While I'm not convinced the crowd is always the wisest, I think it's likely we'll hear more creative ideas from the crowd than if we work exclusive of the so-called non-experts.

Developing as a Leader? Sometimes Less Is More—3 Questions to Ask Yourself

Developing as a Leader? Sometimes Less Is More—3 Questions to Ask Yourself | Leadership Fundamentals | Scoop.it

I was recently coaching a client who had been identified by his organization as a top performer. During our first call, we talked about the things he initially wanted to focus on for his professional growth and development.

In short order, the client mentioned five large development goals—and my sense was that he could have easily doubled that list if I had given him an extra minute or two.

This didn’t surprise me—my experience has been that if asked, most leaders can identify a laundry list of development goals for themselves.

What I’ve learned, though, is that for leadership development to be most effective it’s better to focus on only one or two objectives at a time—to gather, versus scatter, our forces when establishing a learning focus.
