Darrin J Wikoff's insight:

Setting strategy, defining objectives, building plans that are not aligned with the common belief and value systems is the definition of "disengaged leadership".  I agree that Leaders must create new mental models and inspire new value systems in order to drive change...but they can't do it in isolation.  The "do-tell" method doesn't apply here.  Leaders must engage and be engaged.  Leaders must recognize when it's best to follow...and be the First Follower.

Darrin J Wikoff's insight:

What a great concept! "Outbound Learning" replaces conventional classroom and board room workshops with adventure, intrigue and excitement. Getting out of the comfort zone means getting away from familiar surroundings. If you expect your team to think outside the box, you need to get them out of the day-to-day box.

Profound leadership is and has always been a journey -- the net sum of the journeys of everyone in the organization and the combination their life stories.

Powerful leaders have a way of moving people out on such journeys to create the next chapter in the life of the organization, thereby intertwining the lives of the leader with his/her people and weaving their stories together in such a way where the whole far exceeds the sum of the parts.

The Urgent Need To Develop Global Leaders For Company Growth

The Urgent Need To Develop Global Leaders For Company Growth | Leadership for Asset Management Excellence | Scoop.it
One-third of global organizations have identified “global leadership” as a serious constraint. Global leaders are distinguished by their willingness to leave their country of origin and take on new assignments that may require using a new language or adapting to a new culture. Consequently, 70% of larger organizations have plans to increase their overseas assignments. Yet, ironically, less than a third of these organizations have any formal leadership development process in place.
Darrin J Wikoff's insight:

The key to developing global leaders is getting skill development started earlier in people’s careers. Let’s not wait until leaders are in their forties to begin providing them with the ability to lead.  The average age of today's Supervisor is 33...and less than 10% have received formal training.

If you've never seen this video you may become mesmerized by the oddity of dance moves coming from the "leader".  But after you've regained your composure, watch it again and pay attention to the milestones...duration between followers.  The longest duration of time in a change process is the time it takes the "leader" to engage the first follower.  You must have the emotional fortitude and stamina to stick it out...no matter how uncomfortable it may be.  Once the first follower joins the change you won't be the only change "leader" and change happens more rapidly.

The AU-OEE-TEEP PICK 3 Lottery

The AU-OEE-TEEP PICK 3 Lottery | Leadership for Asset Management Excellence | Scoop.it

Are your metrics aligned with your level of authority over asset management decisions?  If not, you're playing the PICK 3 lottery and your numbers are randomly drawn by AU, OEE and TEEP.

Darrin J Wikoff's insight:

Overall Equipment Effectiveness, or OEE, is one of three metrics used by engineers and business leaders to evaluate how well they are using assets to generate value for their business. OEE, as a metric, measures the effectiveness of the asset, whether the asset is a system, machine or component, when the asset is in use.  This is very important to remember, and what differentiates OEE from it’s siblings, Asset Utilization and Total Effective Equipment Performance.  OEE’s time factor is a percentage of “Scheduled Time”.

Asset Utilization (AU) is more commonly used by Plant Managers and Business Unit leaders to measure the percentage of total capacity utilized.  AU is often referred to as the “hidden plant” metric because it will show you how much volume is unrealized because of decisions made to not use the asset.  The time factor for AU, unlike OEE, is based on calendar hours, or “Total Time”.  This means the denominator for time is always a full 24-hours/day duration for the evaluation period.

Total Effective Equipment Performance, better known as TEEP, is a combination of the OEE and AU metrics.  If AU measures how much available capacity was utilized, and OEE measures how effectively the asset was utilized, then TEEP measures the percentage of total capacity effectively utilized. TEEP is basically OEE multiplied by the percent of Availability, and although TEEP is more often used by senior managers, maintenance and reliability professionals must recognize TEEP objectives and the impact OEE has on the organization’s ability to achieve them.

In the end you need to take care of your body like a well oiled machine and take care of your machines like a well trained athlete. Train hard but with a plan and follow the procedure to prevent failures.

Darrin J Wikoff's insight:

This is a very interesting commentary about the current paradigm paralysis as a business culture.  Over the past 5 years, many companies have placed high emphasis on employees living healthier lifestyles.  Some have even gone so far as to create incentives for physical fitness...the "Lean Employee" campaign. But these same companies are not creating the same emphasis and emotion around asset health.  Assets are People, Processes and Technologies...shouldn't the solution to asset-health be similar if not the same for all three?
