Forgiving: The Hidden Dimension of Exceptional Leadership

Forgiving: The Hidden Dimension of Exceptional Leadership | Leadership & EI | Scoop.it

This article explores the concept of forgiveness in the context of leadership, and suggests that forgiveness is one of the keys that distinguish mediocre or ineffective leadership from the exceptional. Below, the authors analyse the forgiving personality through a psychodynamic lens, and discuss how truly transformational leaders use forgiveness to advance societies, organisations and individuals.

Helena Gonçalves's curator insight, October 9, 2013 1:26 AM

Leaders have such an important effect on many people’s lives that their lack of forgiveness can create a climate where anger, bitterness and animosity prevent a whole organisation, society or nation from being creative, learning, growing and developing their full potential.

Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders?

Why Do So Many Incompetent Men Become Leaders? | Leadership & EI | Scoop.it

The real gender issue isn't a lack of qualified women, but a surplus of unqualified men. The main reason for the uneven management sex ratio is our inability to discern between confidence and competence.

Carol Williams's curator insight, August 29, 2013 1:07 PM

Wonderful piece. Regarding the section on Music: I found that concentrating at times can be difficult when the office is constantly moving or at home when the TV in on, the dogs are playing or the kids are argueing. I've downloaded an app for $1.99 called the Sound Machine. Best two bucks I've ever spent. I customize the white noise to my liking and mood and after a few minutes, the whole world is tuned out and I can work for hours (or until someone needs me to solve a problem).

Shelby Stephens's curator insight, September 3, 2013 3:24 PM

The first section of this article is entirguing, saying that people are at their most creative potential in the shower after they wake up. Other points that are being made are: the science behand creativity, how to manage and channel creativity, and how it all relates to being a more creative and innovative leader versus management.

Melinda Berge's curator insight, September 5, 2013 8:37 PM

In addition to talking about how to be more in touch with your creative side, this talks about the challenges of managing leaders, especially creative ones.

Millennials Will Soon Rule The World: But How Will They Lead?

Millennials Will Soon Rule The World: But How Will They Lead? | Leadership & EI | Scoop.it

In the last few years there has been a lot of research on Millennials and how they're different. But a new topic has now come up in many of my conversations with HR and business executives: What is their leadership style and how will they lead?

Don Cloud's curator insight, September 16, 2013 8:11 PM

Rescooping ... powerful insights about the millenial generation's perspective of leadership.

Some insight I would offer (feel free to disagree) ... I wholeheartedly disagree with any/all negative connotations about millenials -- period.  My own personal experience is that they are motivated, talented, and hungry to make an impact -- there's a lot of potential energy and talent just waiting to be unleashed.  Their expectations of their leaders and of themselves are very high, and they are looking to being challenged -- isn't this the way it's supposed to be?

Leaders -- it's time to "giddy up" if you want to be a relevant leader in the 21st century.  Millenials are eager to step up.  It's your choice as a leader to either step up to the challenge of leading millenials, or step aside.

Roy Sheneman, PhD's curator insight, September 17, 2013 10:24 AM

Good perspective to consider. This is the question asked of every generation...I am confident the Millenials will meet the leadership challenge.

Patricia D. Sadar - Career and Leadership Acceleration Coach's comment, September 17, 2013 5:52 PM
I agree completely with you Don! Gen Y want to contribute, they want to be creative, they want to be heard, and are eager to grow their skills. Leaders who learn how to effectively communicate and energize will tap into their wonderful talents! As leaders we can't expect them to plan on staying with one employer for life. They don't want to wait years to grow their career.

Etude intéressante, mais à nuancer.

Ron McIntyre's curator insight, October 2, 2013 10:52 AM

Not surprising but still needs more exploration by authentic leaders, the key is that one can overpower the tendency to quelsh empathy in their roles. But it is not easy nor is it often truly understood.

Chris Brown's curator insight, October 2, 2013 3:05 PM

"Whether you're with a team at work [or] your family dinner, all of that hinges on how we adapt our behaviors to the behaviors of other people, and power takes a bite out of that ability, which is too bad."

A powerful statement.  How can we keep focused on connecting to others so we don't become less empathetic?
