If it were only so in the land of Dilbert.  Unfortunately this is pervasive in many organizations - lack of trust, lack of sharing knowledge and no collaboration all go hand in hand and are together the tools of a failure to innovate.

Wonderul Scoop Kenneth!  I am currently working on understanding inclusion by exploring exclusion and this is absolutely perfect!  

 

While we may have a "diverse" employee base"  if we have authoritative and distrusting cultures, it is impossible to have inclusion!

After reading Steven’s Snyder’s new book, Leadership and the Art of Struggle, I wanted to know more about his theory of positive and destructive tension.  So we connected to talk about vision, experiences, maps and tension.

My key take away:  The right pressures in the right combinations create positive Flow.

Steven describes several sources of tension which he maps into quadrants.   We experience “tensions of tradition” when we work to challenge and disrupt our team’s patterns.   We may feel the “tensions of aspiration” when we have conflicting visions or goals for the future.  These can be good, or the source of deep struggle.

I asked Steve to share more… just how can those tight shoulders lead to “flow”?  What would I want my map to look like?

“Maps which show moderate to moderate-high levels of aspirational tension, lower levels of Tradition Tension and very low levels of Relationship or Identity Tension are which i would call “Flow”.    Tension maps which show low levels of all tensions are not producing enough tension to motivate high levels of achievement.

With respect to higher levels of tension.  This is a struggle.  There is not an “ideal” type of struggle.  everyone struggles differently.  The point is that the tension map can tell you what to do about it.”

If you’re curious as to how this all works, you can get in on a free pilot of Steve’s online assessment, Adaptive Leader Profile.  You go online, answer some questions about yourself and your situation, and he will send you back a free map and interpretation.  The only caveat is that you need to wait until he get’s enough data to ensure validity (hey, it’s a pilot).

I took it, and am looking forward to the report.  Like you, I’ve got plenty of pressure worth mapping.

A (mostly) great post with some sound advice for better presentations.  Here's my take on it .....
 

Design

At the risk of upsetting all those wonderful Graphic Designers out there, I would recommend going easy on the fancy designs.   They are not essential.  What is essential  is a clear simple strategy with one idea per slide, minimal text, no bullet points (yes I mean it!) and clear simple pictures, graphs and diagrams to illustrate your verbal messages.
 

Content
Developing compelling content is important but try to avoid using a script when you deliver.    reading scripts leads to flat, lifeless delivery and makes it much harder to respond, "on the fly2 to your audience.  Instead use  a few cue cards with key points only or a simple mind map.  Either will keep you on track without restricting your ability to improvise in response to audience reaction.

 

Story Telling
To true. Stories are much more engaging that lists of facts or endless graphs.  Stories also create emotional engagement which is needed if you want the audience to be motivated to do something after the presentation. 

 

Humour
Yes it is powerful but it is risky too.   Telling jokes rarely works and can lead to all sorts of problems (poor timing, inappropriate content etc.)  Instead use gentle self deprecating humour.  Be willing to poke a little fun at yourself and the audience will warm to you.

My take on good presentations:  1) Story 2) Content: Restrain your left brain 3) Design: the experience 4) Humor (optional).  Presenting starts with story and uses the visual design to reinforce and add new dimensions to your message. Design the experience, not the slides. Humor works if it's actually funny--not contrived. I've seen a lot that doesn't. Humor is optional.  If it comes naturally, great.  Focusing on story and image is mandatory.  Use serious restraint with putting words on your slides.  Words are processed by the rational, 'left-brain' which takes your audience out of any emotional experience and into thinking and linear processing.  Take them on a journey, don't give them a lecture.  If you feel compelled to give your audience words, give them a handout when you're done.

The four are legitimate, but I wish there were only four. It is like seven habits and four assumptions. There are many more of each that need to weeded out and negotiated. Education, for example, is a constant reconstruction of exisitng personal and collective understanding.

 

The term I use for common sense is uncommon sense. Gadamer, Vico, and Humboldt wrote about common sense in this fashion. It is the glue that brings the community or congregation together and holds them together.

In this in-depth talk, ethnographer and leadership expert Simon Sinek reveals the hidden dynamics that inspire leadership and trust. In biological terms, leaders get the first pick of food and other spoils, but at a cost. When danger is present, the group expects the leader to mitigate all threats even at the expense of their personal well-being.


Understanding this deep-seated expectation is the key difference between someone who is just an “authority” versus a true “leader.”

Do you have too many people to check them closely? Either you prescribe every detail and control everything (i.e. you use them as a sort of robots...) or you find a way to encompass their creativity, their own initiation, you tell them what, when, which quality (and find way of course to control their output of course) but you do not bind their imagination and actions down to the hows... example: customer care of American Express....:

(a) clear goal,

(b) guardrails (but not minute details about the hows),

(c) high velocity feedbacks (from the customers for knowing the quality of the output),

(d) coaching and support (you do everything that they are trained and kept well because you know that the satisfied people make others more easily satisfied... you are smart...:-)))

Releasing a bit of the pressure brought by the "management by KPI" style seems to work... At least for America Express: "Within just three years, the company saw a consistent 10% annual improvement in what Bush calls “service margins.”

The current gap in technology knowledge and lack of leadership preparation related to digital literacy for school environments can cause serious problems, as school leaders, parents, and broader social communities are currently realizing. Educational institutions should consider this Digital Citizenship model as a potential new tool to for students, faculty and staff—both on-site and online.
