Ad of the Day: How Good Is This Vacuum? You Can Climb a Skyscraper With Its Suction

LG hopes this will draw attention to the technological innovation happening in banal, everyday tools. The thinking makes sense: A demonstration like this is unexpected in a sector that suffers from an almost painful lack of imagination, and it places LG's Code Zero soundly in the ranks of the extreme demo-purveyors that populate the leisure tech space (we'd like to see Samsung test its fear-fighting VR in a situation like this!).

5 Telltale Signs You Don't Understand Big Data | Learning - Social Media - Innovation | Scoop.it
I’ll admit it: Big Data is not my favorite term.  It really trivializes and summarizes the trend too far, creating misconceptions and misperceptions of what this incredible shift in our technology, culture and world actually is. One pill to rule them all: 3D printing tech combines multiple drugs in a single pill

One pill to rule them all: 3D printing tech combines multiple drugs in a single pill | Learning - Social Media - Innovation | Scoop.it

Scientists at the National University of Singapore (NUS) have developed a new technique that uses a 3D printer to combine multiple doses of different medications in a single time-release tablet.

Here's how it works – or at least, how it would work in a clinical setting …

The doctor starts by indicating on a computer program what medication(s) the patient needs to take, in what doses and how often. This information is used to generate a computer model of a small multi-pronged template, such as the one being picked up with the tweezers in the photo at the top of the page.

[PDF] The digital talent gap: Developing skills for today's digital organizations

[PDF] The digital talent gap: Developing skills for today's digital organizations | Learning - Social Media - Innovation | Scoop.it
The shortage of digital skills in the current marketplace is unprecedented. It is estimated that over 4.4 million IT jobs will be created around Big Data by 2015; however, only a third of these new jobs will be filled. Martha Lane Fox, the UK’s digital inclusion champion, believes over 16 million people in the UK lack the basic digital skills to fully benefit from the Internet. Even Millenials are a matter of concern. In a survey comprising over 800 middle to upper management executives from over 50 industries, nearly one in five Millenials in the modern workplace are perceived to be lacking in analytical skills.

The reasons driving this skills shortage are not hard to identify. The usage of mobile, social and analytical tools is permeating the length and breadth of every function across the organization. Unlike the past, the impact of these digital technologies and tools is felt not just in the IT department. This means that the magnitude of training and re-skilling thatis required is enormous. Moreover, each new technology cycle has brought forth new requirements and these cycles are increasingly getting shorter. Employees must now refresh their skills more frequently if they wish to stay relevant in this rapidly changing digital environment. The head of India R&D Labs of software firm SAP succinctly states: “The shelf life of a software engineer today is no more than that of a cricketer – about 15 years. The 20-year-old guys provide me more value than the 35-year-olds do.

Rapid robots staff new Adidas factory

Rapid robots staff new Adidas factory | Learning - Social Media - Innovation | Scoop.it
Adidas has announced that it is ready to begin commercial production of footwear at a robot-staffed factory in Germany. The so-called "Speedfactory" in Ansbach will apparently allow the firm to produce more shoes, with greater precision and with new designs.

The 4,600-sq m (49,500 sq ft) Ansbach facility was set up as a pilot in December last year, allowing Adidas to test both the new manufacturing process and a new production model. The automation, it says, allows production to be brought "to where the consumer is," presumably due the the virtual elimination of staffing costs.

Once up and running, the facility will be operated by Adidas' strategic partner Oechsler Motion. In addition to being able to produce goods "faster than ever before," the factory will help to reduce shipping emissions and the use of adhesives, the firm says.

The first pairs of footwear to be produced at the Speedfactory will be revealed later this year, with large-scale production due to begin in 2017. A second Speedfactory is being planned for the US.
