First Impressions. How are you doing? Part I

First Impressions. How are you doing? Part I | Leadership | Scoop.it

We all do it & it's an important behavior to us when the situation matters...but why do we care sometimes and other times (with other people) we don't?

Brett Baughman's insight:

Ok so imagine that you were about to have the opportunity of a life-time.  You are going to have a shot at meeting your potential Soul Mate.  By all rights, this could be the person you are going to not only spend the rest of your life with but that you will mostly likely change your life & behaviors to impress, make laugh, make cry, to please and to build a life together.  It's a very important moment, some might even say vital to the success of the quality of your life.

This is obviously an important milestone in your life that could shape who you are & the journey you take so it's not a surprise that we would take this seriously and that the majority of us put conscious effort into making sure the way we present ourselves is that of a positive light.

So what is it that makes us care?  Are we doing it for ourselves?  or are we doing it for someone or something else?

I am interested in hearing from you!

  • What have you done to make a good impression on someone?  and why did you do it?
  • What has worked
  • And What has failed?

This is PART I to a two part blog about first impressions.  Please add your comments below and hold tight for PART II; you will be glad you did

Actors line up for some amazing photography at the Oscar's; not counting the infamous selfie! | Leadership | Scoop.it

Most of the photography news surrounding this year's Oscars have been about Ellen's record breaking selfie, which was so popular that it briefly broke Twitter—and caused a minor kerfuffle when it came out that she was tweeting from a Samsung phone onstage, but an iPhone backstage. But even amidst all the attention on smartphone photography and selfies, it seems there's still plenty of room for more traditional photography at events like this—as evidenced by the Vanity Fair Instagram feed.

Brett Baughman's insight:

I was happy to see this article about Vanity Fair and other photographers creating valuable images that represent actors in playful & purposeful work.  So much of what we see has become dominated by advertising that it's difficult at times to watch anything that is not scripted.  Social media has become Social Mania!

TED Talks Are Wildly Addictive For Three Powerful Scientific Reasons

TED Talks Are Wildly Addictive For Three Powerful Scientific Reasons | Leadership | Scoop.it

Persuasive presentations include these three laws of communication: they are emotional, novel and easy to remember.

Via Alex Moyle
Brett Baughman's insight:

If you don't know what TED Talks are yet; you should!

In my opinion, TED Talks are the most powerful outlet available today for brilliant minds to unite & innovate our world with ideas that will produce positive change.  If we want to grow as a society & evolve we must engage in activities that challenge our minds to think differently; and to envision greater goods, greater outcomes.

TED Talks are doing a phenomenal job of inspiring & educating their audiences to create, collaborate & develop new ways of living; new ways of achieving.

People always ask me where is a good point to start with personal development.  TED Talks are perfect.  Each talk is limited to less than 20 minutes so that everyone has time to enjoy them and can't use the old excuse of being too busy.

I challenge everyone to ask themselves the question "Am I living the life that I designed?" or "Am I living a life that was engineered by someone else?"  Are you producing the quality of life you desire?

TED Talks cover just about every topic.  Search their site for a category you enjoy & have fun expanding the way you think and creating new ideas.

Do You Control Your Money? Or Does It Control Yo

Do You Control Your Money? Or Does It Control Yo | Leadership | Scoop.it

"Our Society is Failing Right Now!" How 'HARD" does your money have you working?  3 Steps to take back the control

Brett Baughman's insight:

In my line of business I am constantly faced with the challenge of helping my clients to create more money and/or improve their money habits.  I would estimate that 9 out of 10 of my clients will tell me that they feel the quality of their life is negatively effected by not having enough money or not enjoying the work they do and therefore it is difficult to be willing to work even harder to get ahead.

So what can you do to TAKE BACK THE CONTROL?

3 Steps to CONTROL YOUR MONEY!

1.  Change Your Mind!  You have to start thinking about money in a different way.  Money has NO VALUE!  Let me say that again... MONEY HAS NO VALUE....until you have an exchange.  Correct?
if you have a million one dollar bills laying around your house you would feel so excited right now wouldn't you?  But what if no one would take the money or you didn't want anything that was being sold for money.  Money is an exchange of a promise.  What is behind the exchange is where our society is failing right now!  The exchange should be an action that is done with the intention of a mutual benefit.  You want a product or service and someone else wants a product or service for themselves.  When you pay them with 'money' they are in turn able to then take that token and go pay for their product or service.  Get it.  When someone rips someone off or provides them with a sub-par, low-quality return - THE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!  So the first step is to understand that how you act and what is important to you (Integrity or Profit) will change your outlook on money and your ability to grow Wealth.

2.  Integrity to a fault.  It's funny because this statement means that you can be too honest.  Just as saying Polite to a fault means too polite.  But when you really analyze what we are saying it's saying that there is someone who judges how polite you are to tell you if it's the right amount or not.  Same with Honest to a fault.  Is there such a thing?  I don't believe so if you are also very honest.  I would venture to believe the only people that would feel someone was too honest would be someone who had something to hide or was in fear of that honesty burning them.  Integrity to a fault means that you stand up for what you believe in "your values."  And you make sure that you are always presenting the best you.  The best you in your work, your relationships and the behaviors you conduct each and every day.

When you provide your service or product to someone, take a moment and make sure that what you are doing still WOWs you.  Are you committed to excellence or committed to getting paid?  This alone will turn your money habits on their head.

3.  Passion!  You have to be passionate about what you do if you ever want to excel.  You can be successful and achieve great feats but when you find passion in what you do the ride is MUCH SMOOTHER!  When you love what you do and make sure that it's always done to the best ability, you will have that 'IT' factor that everyone talks about.  You will have that energy that draws people to you.  And it changes you in amazing ways.  You attract people and opportunities into your life you wouldn't have before.  Does what you are doing right now for your work or career excite you?  Are you making the money you want to make right now?  Do you see a future in what you are doing?  If yes, congratulations.  Take some time to recognize your hard work and to outline what you enjoy so you can continue on that path.  If not, you have to decide how long you are ok with not enjoying the quality of success and potential you could.  But I can guarantee you that once you do....it's a NEW WORLD!!

Mars or Bust! Would you take a one-way trip away from Earth? | Leadership | Scoop.it

Brett Baughman's insight:

For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with outer space.  My television is permanently set to the Science Channel; I have seen every documentary on Black Holes, the String Theory, the Multi-Verse; you name it.  Our planet & the Universe are brilliant but the thought of venturing 55 million kilometers (minimum distance at closest orbit) from everything that is familiar to me is a bit risky.

If there is one thing that I have learned from my voracious appetite for all things galactic is space is a violent environment.  The sheer magnitude of space creates a challenge we have not yet been able to master.  Our technology is rapidly improving but we are only just beginning to learn about space exploration beyond our solar system.  And every year we discover new & amazing facts about how 'things' work.  So while I would absolutely love to take a trip in a space shuttle and get to look back at Earth as the Sun rises and wakes up half the planet, for now I will be content with observing the progress, challenges and discoveries made by these few brave souls; who see this opportunity as a different one than me right now!

Would you take the trip? If given the chance would you leave Earth 'for good' and venture to be a pioneer of space travel and space habitation?  I would love to hear your comments.

Snow, Ice & Cold Weather...will it ever end?? | Leadership | Scoop.it

My family lives in Illinois and every day I get another crazy news report that there has been 2 - 5 inches of fallen snow or that school has been cancelled again!  I don't remember there being a winter this harsh on the Midwest or East Coast, do you?

My sister is a school teacher and has already has 6 snow days in 2014.  That is a new record I believe.

Anyways, I am even more grateful to be living on the West Coast right now and I am sorry for anyone who is experiencing hardship due to the extreme climate.

This is a great time to pick up a new hobby, teach yourself a new skill or take time to do the things you have been putting off!

If you find you are struggling to find excitement, passion or focus during this season, email me at brett@brettbaughman.com and visit my website www.brettbaughman.com for some ideas on how to make 2014 your best year yet!
