Netflix values freedom and responsibility, so they have no need for a vacation policy.  They attract hordes of “A-players” but do not tolerate “Brilliant Jerks.” The culture expels them most times before their manager needs to. Apple guides people to “Do Great and Innovative Things,” which leads to a philosophy of excellence.  They encourage employees to not play it safe, and they reward employees when they “Think Different.”  Google’s mantras of “Don’t Be Evil” and “ability over experience” suggest that super-smart graduates from elite universities enter the Googleplex determined to succeed, ready to contribute and share the fruits of their talents with the online universe.

When you hold a certain belief or unconsciously decide on something, you’ll have a tendency to focus on and favor information that supports your belief or decision, discarding anything that contradicts it. You do it without even realizing it.  Psychologists call this confirmation bias.

This is a great example of coming up with a principle that is a guide line for making a decision! This is how I define CORE VALUES.

 

"We tell people, “Don’t try to figure it out all by yourself.” We have a five-minute rule. If you’re sitting at your desk for five minutes and you can’t figure out whatever you’re working on, go ask someone. There’s always someone who’s more senior who may know about that. Even if they can’t help you, they’re probably a good sounding board, and may be able to point you to someone who says, “We already solved that, and you can find it here.”
