They know who they are

Authentic leaders go much deeper than their life story, what they have been through, or the issues they have. They embrace their true self and their ethical values along with their weaknesses and use their strengths to their advantage without worrying about what others think.

Roderic Langer's curator insight, October 6, 2014 1:19 PM

Being an authentic leader means starting by being an authentic person yourself.  In my life, I've put the people that matter in my life on notice that they only get truth from me - all the time.  Wanna know something about me?  Just ask.  I will give you the truth.  I will tell you what you want to know and I will also tell you the things you didn't know to ask.  You may not like or agree with all the things you hear, but you will know me and know that whatever you see is the authentic me and not a poster of what I WANT you to see.  I liked the fact that this article included a bit on leaders really knowing themselves and being comfortable with who they are themselves.  That is a huge step in being comfortable with others and thus becoming an effective leader.

Really identify with #5:

Develop the squeezed middle: Once a business grows and a middle management tier emerges, these are the people who can make or break growth. They are submerged by the instructions from above and the demands from below and unless their skills are developed, the culture is collaborative and the direction clear, they will drown. Identifying the skill and personal development needs of these individuals to help them become future leaders can catapult your capacity to a new level.

Reminders of some of the simple things we can do.  Removing operational risks from your business also reduces subsequent financial risks, Are you doing everything to reduce your OH&S exposure?

Newcastle Web Consulting's curator insight, February 26, 2015 4:31 PM

Think beyond the cash box.

When that cash supply gets low, as it tends to do in small businesses, don't close the door on getting what you need. Pascale recommends the ages-old practice of bartering. She used bartering successfully by offering her own PR services in exchange for work by an interior design firm when she needed an office redesign. As with the vendor negotiation, the worst answer you can get is a simple no, and you might be surprised by how quickly you'll hear a yes.

When I was in graduate school, I took what I thought was going to be a “filler” type of class in Business Leadership. It turned out to be one of the most interesting classes I have ever taken and it set in motion a life-long study of what it means to be a leader.

The shrill, noisy, and extemporaneous nature of the social web is not exactly an ideal environment for the traditional notion of leadership. I’ve been thinking about this a lot and have listed below a few ways I believe social media presents challenges for leadership....
