10 Things Every Teacher Should Know How To Do With Google Docs | Edudemic | Leadership, Education & Technology | Scoop.it

Google Docs is a powerful word processing tool that many schools have adopted. As it’s similar to Microsoft Word and other word processing tools, most of its features are intuitive to use. However, in addition to completing many of the functions of a traditional word processor, Google Docs provides even more capabilities that can be invaluable to educators. Here are ten tricks that can make your life easier with Google Docs:

I have step by step increase the usage and teaching about Google Docs, Slides, Hangouts and Drive at school. It becomes easier if changes take place a step at a time in your teaching and learning environments.

Mark Fuson's curator insight, July 19, 2014 10:03 AM

I must admit, I've got to get better at some of these. One of the biggest issues with learning something is practice and practice takes time and the willingness to fail. Unfortunately, teachers often are so rushed by their schedules that they can't afford to struggle with something in order to learn it because they have 165 students, 3 different preps, papers to grade, a family life, and curriculum to create. Unless we change these factors, how can a teacher learn new skills in the classroom and why would they try to if experiencing a little failure could negatively impact evaluation?

Kim Lindskog's curator insight, July 25, 2014 5:07 PM

As we think about what it is that we want to help teachers with in relation to Google apps...this might help with the conversation.

Collective Intelligence and practice-based Innovation: An idea evaluation method based on Collective Intelligence

Collective Intelligence and practice-based Innovation: An idea evaluation method based on Collective Intelligence | Leadership, Education & Technology | Scoop.it

Users and customers are becoming increasingly important sources of knowledge due to changes ininnovation policies and paradigms. Simultaneously innovation is becoming more of a networking activity. New methods are needed for processing information and ideas coming from multiple sources more effectively.

For example, the whole personnel of an organisation are seen as a great potential for innovation. The recent development of communication technologies such as the Internet has increased interest towards the multidisciplinary field of collective intelligence. To investigate the possibilities of collective intelligence, the nest-site selection process of honey bees was used asmodel for an idea evaluation tool, a prototype of which was then tested in a case organisation.

The results were promising; the prototype was able to evaluate ideas effectively, and it was highly accepted in the organisation.

27 Simple Ways To Check For Understanding ~ TeachThought

27 Simple Ways To Check For Understanding ~ TeachThought | Leadership, Education & Technology | Scoop.it

"Checking for understanding is the foundation of teaching.Whether you’re using formative assessment for data to personalize learning within a unit, or more summative data to refine a curriculum map, the ability to quickly and easily check for understanding is a critical part of what you do. (Which was the idea behind our post last March, “10 Assessments You Can Perform In 90 Seconds Or Less.”)

"The following infographic Mia MacMeekin offers up 27 additional ways to check for understanding. Some aren’t necessarily quick–”Test what you learned in a new situation”–but there are a dozen or more other ideas that are worth adding to your teacher toolbox, many of which aren’t content-related, but rather cognitively-related (Locate 3 people who agree with your point of view.)"

How to Reinvent Project Based Learning to Be More Meaningful | MindShift | Leadership, Education & Technology | Scoop.it
Project-based learning continues to be misinterpreted as a single teaching strategy rather than as a set of design principles that allow us to introduce the philosophy of inquiry into education in an intelligent and grounded way. It’s time to not only address the flaws in PBL, but to reinvent it in a way that leads to deeper learning, creative inquiry, and a better fit with a collaborative world in which doing and knowing are one thing.

Think about the assessment within the Project based learning. What are the key elements in the authentic/inquiry-based  learning approach? Are the projects interrelated / themed toward learning objectives? Did students develop good quality portfolios and provide presentations to enhance the learning experience within the learning environment? Is the Rubrics focused on process or production or both?

Thanks Rob. You're correct.I have not come up with my own taxonomy, but I never intended to. Unfortunately we're no closer to empirical evidence then. I'm aware of the genesis of the work, and a group I'm in is puzzling over how it has been recontextualised to the teaching domain and become rather doctrinaire. I do hope, however, that it is a little more pedagogically valuable than Chomsky's work. It would be an interesting PhD study for someone so inclined - to chart a research agenda for Bloom's taxonomy as applied to education.
