Collaboration Matters

Collaboration Matters | Leader of Pedagogy | Scoop.it

Blogger's note: This post focuses on the importance of integrating collaboration into classroom practice. In my next post, I'll talk about strategies for successful facilitation of collaborative work...

Learning is a social process, and the learning process is deepened when ideas are challenged and learners are pushed to produce work that surpasses their expectations of what they can do.

That said, working in groups is a continually challenging process. It is important that students aren't forced to work together on projects where collaboration isn't necessary or beneficial to the final product.

I like the image with two students have a conversation without a screen. It can be done with digital technology, but the tried and true is good for students. It humanizes the other in what is often a virtual world.

Allan Shaw's curator insight, January 23, 2014 4:37 PM

"John Dewey believed that education must be " . . . a process of living and not a preparation for future living." This powerful idea is a helpful reminder of the rich, insightful growth and knowledge that can come from deep, collaborative learning experiences."

Therefore, it could be said true learning is about acting out the theory, of rhetoric and reality remaining close, of adults modelling for young people appropriate learning attitudes and behaviours, as those young people, if forced to choose, will copy what you do rather than do what you say!

Voto: 9.

Why educating the educators is complex

Why educating the educators is complex | Leader of Pedagogy | Scoop.it
Teaching is both craft and profession -- and more.

Thus teaching is a deeply social and emotional activity. You have to know your students and be able to read them quickly, and from that reading make decisions to slow down or speed up, stay with a point or return to it later, connect one student’s comment to another’s.

Simultaneously, you are assessing on the fly Susie’s silence, Pedro’s slump, Janelle’s uncharacteristic aggressiveness. Students are, to varying degrees, also learning from each other, learning all kinds of things, from how to carry oneself to how to multiply mixed numbers.

How teachers draw on this dynamic interaction varies depending on their personal style, the way they organize their rooms, and so on—but it is an ever-present part of the work they do.

The demands and needs of our students are changing and we need to ensure we keep up with these demands and in fact be early adopters and not laggards when it comes to change.

Training the Brain to Listen: A Practical Strategy for Student Learning and Classroom Management

Training the Brain to Listen: A Practical Strategy for Student Learning and Classroom Management | Leader of Pedagogy | Scoop.it

Editor's note: This post is co-authored by Marcus Conyers who, with Donna Wilson, is co-developer of the M.S. and Ed.S. Brain-Based Teaching degree programs at Nova Southeastern University.

During the school year, students are expected to listen to and absorb vast amounts of content. But how much time has been devoted to equipping students with ways to disconnect from their own internal dialogue (self-talk) and to focus their attention fully on academic content that is being presented? Listening is hard work even for adults. When students are unable to listen effectively, classroom management issues arise.

So if we place a computer on the desk in front of students and change nothing else that changes education? That is the underlying issue. We have not changed the basic construct of an industrial age model of education. When will that happen? We seem comfortable with the status quo because it protects jobs and moves particular agendas forward in profitable ways.
